Magic family

Manifestation

The magic families are the different modes of operation of the latter, its mechanisms. These families group spells and rituals according to common characteristics in terms of functioning and desired effects. Of course, some spells can belong to more than one family:
  • abjuration: this family allows magic to be used against itself. It can be seen as a sort of mirror effect in a way, a “return to sender” response. This magic is mainly used for protection and countermagic. When an abjuration spell is successful, the caster is not affected by their opponent's magic and returns the spell as is to the enemy.
  • conjuration: conjuration spells allow you to cancel the others' spells or to repel entities. Conjuration is also a family of spells widely used in countermagic to cancel curses or break certain spells (such as protection spells or magical traps). An exorcism is a conjuration.
  • divination: divination spells allow you to reveal what is hidden or secret, that is to say the future, the past, lost or forgotten things... There are various ways of practicing divination but, as soon as a word ends in "mancy", it is a form of divination (including necromancy).
  • enchantment: enchantments allow you to infuse magic or a specific spell into an object or a being. They are mainly used to strengthen weapons with spells, to create artifacts or to strengthen or weaken people. Also, enchanting an object so that it produces a particular effect thanks to a specific spell means mixing the family of enchantments with the family of the spell in question. For example, an invisibility cloak is enchanting an item to produce an illusion spell.
  • bewitchment: this family allows the user to manipulate the mind and consciousness of creatures and beings. This is a form of mind control. This manipulation can aim to influence someone's thoughts or to take control of a still living body.
  • evocation: evocation spells directly use magic to create or destroy. They generally require a lot of skill and concentration from the user since it involves creating from pure magic. The perfect example for this spell family is the traditional fireball.
  • illusion: illusion spells are intended to deceive the target's senses. They make it possible to perceive things which are not there, or even which do not exist, or, on the contrary, to conceal what is present. Concealing or invisibility spells are illusions.
  • invocation: this family of spells allows you to bring to yourself or to a given place entities, beings or objects that are in different places, sometimes very distant geographically or in other planes. Teleportation and summoning spells are part of the invocation family.
  • transmutation: it is a partial or total modification of the physical integrity of a being or an object. These can be: an enlargement, a shrinkage, a modification of the material (like lead which becomes gold), etc. In the case of total transmutation, we speak of metamorphosis.
Families shouldn't be confused with disciplines, which group spells according to their purpose, and approaches, which group magic into different types and schools.
