Nanobots

Microscopic machines that can infiltrate a human body and replicate. Robert Lilly was infected by these, but managed to get them under control for a time. However, he could not completely stop their replication and ultimately, he opted to take control of the bots and store his consciousness (he can do this because he's a Mechanic) which turned him into The Anlace. These bots are what turned Grant Ferryman into a Cyborg, by replacing his organic material with metal (extracted Atrinite from Tanks) and themselves. They are also part of the DENAVID-1 Virus, which will do to other savants what it did to Grant. Sam was infected with these nanobots when the assassin Six hit him with the Razorwire weapon. Drake was able to use his Skill to get rid of most of them, however, one got away and entrenched itself in Sam's mind. He named it Igor and it allows him to communicate with Robert via the anlace.

Discovery

Rom Query accidentally discovered the nanobots while they were trying to create an efficient cyborg body that allowed savants to retain their Skills .
