Martin the Subjugator becomes Demagogue of Althraxia following his victory in The Dragon Wars and the continued infighting amongst nobles, none of which could fully claim the mantle of Emperor.

Martin's rule marked the period of the Demagogues, as his highest-ranking general took up his position following his death. They were not kings in the typical sense since their inheritance was not hereditary, but they did rule absolutely and, at least for a lengthy period, prosperously. This period is often known as "The Thousand Years" for this reason; even though the Demagogues ruled for just a few hundred, it was a "glorious" few hundred, which earns it the hyperbolic title.
