Invention of the Engine

Technological achievement

1420

The engine was first put into use to power Barisean ships.

It originally used a fuse, covered by steel, lining many cartridges filled with minamite. As the steel heated, the minamite was lit, and propelled movement forward. The cartridges needed to be replaced hourly, and thus required storage of minamite at a large scale - this turned out to be quite dangerous.   Modern engines primarily use coal to heat water, which is expelled from the ship as steel. This eliminates the need for mass storage, as water can be drawn from the sea. Engines have also expanded beyond ships, into farming equipment, factories, and textile weaving.
