Fort Heward-Denisete
In the final will and testament of the Fire Genasi Evoker, Caedus Ignis Letali, it stipulated that the inheritor of his estate (his understudy in the Art, Jolene Scalebreaker) was expend all holdings toward the creation of a fortress. The considerable wealth Ignis left behind was able to fund the construction of a citadel and surrounding fortifications on the island in the river delta to the west of Vareholm.
The island was once the home of a Cyclops defeated by adventurers, then was later occupied by a large force of Sahuagin. Ignis, another group of adventurers, and some frontiersmen burned away the Sahuagin infestation. When naming the Fort in his will, Ignis dedicated it to the two frontiersmen who lost their lives on that mission.
Fort Heward-Denisete is heavily fortified, including the possession of its own Barrier, and has been owned since its creation by Jolene Scalebreaker. For a time, the Tiefling Empire was allowed to use the fort as a headquarters for their operations in Idriell. In the time since the empire left, Jolene took a more active role in its administration. As the current Powdersmith, Jolene spends her time split between Fort H-D and Gilnaith.
Stone walls surround the entire island, and two stone bridges connect it to land on the east and west. Within the outer walls, there is space enough for what could be considered a medium-sized town, as well as land for crops and livestock. There are many permanent residents of the island today, referred to colloquially as "Fortfolk."
The northern area of the island is dominated by the Citadel. Designed by Jolene before it was known the island would have its own Barrier, the Citadel was built to withstand the most intense threats Idriell has to offer. Very few people have been allowed access to the innermost sections of the citadel, and those who have are supposedly sworn to secrecy.
It is rumored that the rules of Fort H-D's barrier have been altered in ways that allow for the types of testing and experimentation that wouldn't be allowed in Vareholm. For this reason, it's known as something of a safe haven for those who might be a little more morally ambiguous in their pursuit of magical, technological, or other types of advances.
