Tower of Sight

Written by Salen

This five story tower, located in the southeast of Syll, stands as a bastion of defense against incursion. Here the magus of Syll keep watch for any threats coming from out of the Torn Lands and are prepared to signal the main city in case of attack. There are protective wards all around the tower, and most of the grounds, that were laid with the element of Ether by the Archmagus himself years ago. These wards will last for one year, then have to be cast again. With the truce in place, and many years of trade with the dwarves of Nagar, there really hasn't been any need for an outpost here, yet it is maintained just in case. It's manned by a Lord magus, two full magus's, and four Journeyman Magus.

Layout

The following is an accounting of the layout of the Tower of Sight and what a visiter may find.

Ante-Chamber

Past the magically locked wooden door lies the comfortable greeting room. Couches and chairs line this dimly lit room and the hearth burns with an enchanted flame. An ancient suit of armor rests in the far right corner, and an old charred staff hangs above the hearth.

Cloak room

This large room is where guests can hang their cloaks and/or armor for the duration of their stay. Extra robes, for those without extra traveling clothes, are kept here and they come in colors of deep red, grey, and of course white. A secret door in the north wall is triggered when the empty torch is turned.

Hallway

The small hallway that leads east and west out of the Ante-chamber, leads to the stairs and privy (east), or a small art gallery (west). The gallery holds a beautiful suit of chainmail armor, and a glass case for gems. A marble pillar rests in the corner on which is a finely carved statue of a unicorn in pure white quartz.

Kitchen

This large room has a huge storage room off of it for dried goods and barrels of ale. There is also a wine cellar and a table with a small black cloth. There is a gearbox here to keep some perishables cold, and a great table with chairs in the middle of the kitchen. The hearth also has an enchanted fire, but comes with a metal swinging arm meant for iron cooking pots.

Magus room, large

This huge room on the second floor is where the senior Magus's rest and keeps their belongings. The room is big enough for two beds, weapon racks, a large desk, and of course a closet for extra clothes. Two book stands are filled with reading material and stacks of paperwork sit on the corner of the desk.

Magus rooms, small

These two rooms are where the two Magus's under the Lord's command rest. These rooms have most of the same furnishings that the large guest room has,

Armory

This room holds dozens of normal weapons, both newer, and ancient. Above the rear wall hangs an exquisite two-handed sword with the engravings of tiny dragons in flight. Most normal weapons can be found here, and even some exotic ones not readily seen. There are at least a dozen black powder pistols and rifles and maybe four six shooters as well.

Library

This large, curved, room takes up half of the third floor and has tons of books from all over the different nations. There are history books from Anor, religious books from Syll, art books from Gar city in Garon'd and even poetry from the underground nation of Nagar. Large tables and soft chairs line the walls and centers of this vast room, and the everlasting torches burn steadily through the night. A secret door in the northwest corner leads to the master bedroom.

Master bedroom

This room covers the other half of the fourth floor, and is as elegant as a Nobles chambers in Syll. Hundreds of pillows line the walls, as does artwork from elven artists. Tapestries hang beautifully on walls next to swords and staves. Behind the western wall tapestry lies a secret door to the library which is opened by turning the small vase next to it clockwise, making the catch turn the gears and work the pully's. The bed is covered with both burgundy and azure silks, and it’s wrought iron frame is draped with silver lace. A finely woven, Garon'd made carpet lays at the entrance way, as well as a gnarled wizards staff that hangs near the door like a trophy. Weapon and armor racks stand at the ready near the door as well, and reflect beautifully in the mirrors that hang on the walls by the bed. A huge closet opens near the far wall to hold a full wardrobe of clothes for the lord magus.

Laboratory

The fourth floor is only attainable by casting a fly spell on oneself. There are no stairs, just a six foot diameter hole leading up from the third floor above the stairs there. The whole floor is one large laboratory, holding everything that a mage would need to craft items, or enchant mighty weapons. Notebooks, and notes fill the tables in the corners, and a variety of unusual items grace the walls. A ring in a glass case, a crystal ball hung on an iron pole, and various shields, daggers, and staves. A potion rack stands in the right corner, holding a rainbow of colored vials, and a grand tapestry of the night sky over Nagar hangs flat upon the ceiling.

Purpose / Function

The purpose of the Tower is mainly defense. The magus's here will alert the capitol city of Lyl if there is an attack, then use their magic to hold off any nvaders while they can. A post here usually means you are willing to lay down your life for the people of Syll.

Special Properties

  • The tower and 100 ft around the tower is protected from scrying or other magical detection.
  • The tower is protected from evil at all times, which prevents bodily contact from undead creatures of evil nature. They cannot enter the area, nor exercise control of any one within a 200 year radius of the tower.
  • The wall sconces around the tower are powered by an Everlasting Fire spell. This spell also is used in the hearths and greater fireplaces, to give off little heat, and stay lit for decades.

Architecture

The Tower of Sight is made of stone gathered from the nearby wasteland and assembled with magic.

History

Built here just after the end of the Great War, the tower was originally made for a regimnet of the elven army. Soon after that the Magus Guild aquired the rights to the outpost tower and reorganized the personel to include elven magus's instead of soldiers.

Amenities

The tower was made for defense, yet the Archmagus wasn't a hard man, nor was he a soldier at heart. So when it came time to create this tower for the regiment that was origianlly taking it over, he created two pools of water to help the soldiers relax. After the Magus Guild aquired it, they kept the pools as a refreshing way to relax and unwind while off duty, at least during the warmer months.

Front Pool

This shallow, five foot deep, pool is filled with clear, fresh, water. The magus that raised the tower created two pools and the magic keeps them always fresh. The red brick walkway that leads to the tower passes this pool and its accompanying sign marking the name of the tower. Under the couple of rocks near the edge, lie soaps and oils for cleaning.

Rear pool

Another shallow, three foot deep, pool rests at the rear of the tower. This pool is enchanted and allows it’s bathers to regenerate health very slowly, as long as the damage done was not fire or acid. The crystal clear water is kept magically fresh, and it is mainly concealed by the lush trees kept around the tower.
