The Chasm

Geography

The Chasm is a giant ravine, cleaving Kysa in two. The western part is known as the Wasteland, which is inhabited by the nomadic Half-Orc Clans of Dhon Az'dugh. Part of a powerful Ley-Line once ran through the part of Kysa that is now known as the Wasteland and the Chasm. However, the Ley-Line got disrupted during The Age of Dread, causing a devastating explosion and wreaking havoc on the land.   There are small parts of the landmass that are still connected on the surface level, near the coast, and towards the center of the continent. At its widest point, the Chasm spans nearly ten miles. It is unclear just how deep the Chasm goes, only that the bottom of it is filled with a layer of water, probably due to its proximity to the ocean. The water level starts roughly two miles below the surface.   When the sun is high in the sky, one can see gargantuan bones sticking out of the Chasm's walls as well hanging bridges spanning the more narrow parts of the gap, connecting the eastern and western parts of the Underdark. Few travelers dare to make the journey to cross the Chasm, not just because of the dangers lurking in the Wasteland but also because the crossing in and of itself is dangerous.

Localized Phenomena

There is a high concentration of left-over magical Ley-Line energy. Casting spells is ill-advised near the Chasm as spells tend to have unintended side-effects or even misfire due to the thick magical energy saturating the air. A spell to cure wounds could easily tear open already existing wounds further and ranged spell attacks might not go as far as intended, causing your fireball to explode too close to your party. People who are not used to stronger magical energies are likely to suffer from nosebleeds, headaches, or hallucinations. Sometimes this can also cause the spell to be stronger. And while not as extreme as in the Wasteland, the weather near the Chasm is somewhat unpredictable as well.   Lastly, there is the phenomenon scholars have taken to calling the Call of the Void. While many people will experience this phenomenon at some point or other in their lives, the desire to hurl oneself into the depths of the Chasm seems much more intense, so much so that quite a few skilled adventurers and travelers have met their end at the bottom of the ravine.
