Session 43: The Hags' Hut

General Summary

The Journey Continues

  • That night, the restless skeletons had a chat with the equally restless Professor Burnkles. He asked Dooturr whether he had a soul, which Dooturr said he did. A harder question to answer, however, was whether Thanos had a soul. Thanos just did what Master Dooturr told him to, and Dooturr thought he didn't have any type of sentience. This was interesting to the Professor, who wondered how precisely the difference arose between the two.
  • As they all traveled along, Lumen suspected there may be a winter storm coming along. N'nchyk confirmed this with a light dusting of snow from Druidcraft.
  • As the party went along, Lumen and Viribus had just about had it with N'nchyk's zombie minions, who's lumbering pace was annoyingly shorter than their own. N'nchyk said he could make them lumber faster, and had them lumber-sprint and stop, which may have been worse in some ways.
  • And so wrapped up a rather uneventful day.

Hags and Harbingers

  • The next day, N'nchyk spotted a body along the path they were traveling along. It was a firbolg, and she was brutally wounded. N'nchyk began examining a mark on her neck that was rendered illegible by a laceration across it, but became suspicious before Ashpin budged his way in and healed her.
  • While the rest of the Crew tended to the firbolg, Lumen and Dooturr went to investigate the tracks left behind by the firbolg, who had crawled and stumbled her way as far as she could. There, they met a shockingly intelligent rat, who conversed with Lumen in exchange for some stale bread, saying he might've seen the firbolg stumble through earlier. He also warned them that the path they are following is a dark one; not many rats come back from it.
  • The firbolg, who eventually introduced herself as Magrora, was roused to consciousness. She was in a poor state, both physically and emotionally. Eventually, Ashpin got her to explain that she and her allies, who were as close as family, had been decimated when they tried to destroy the coven of hags in the Moon-Lit Marsh. N'nchyk poked and pried until his suspicions were confirmed; Magrora said she was a part of the Harbingers of Aegis.
  • But she had her doubts. She had loved her family, but was angry and lost that being a Harbinger had brought her this much loss. She thought they did good, but clearly listening to her superiors and doing what the organization wanted was not always a good thing. She felt as if she had no purpose any longer, except to exact revenge on the hags that had killed her family.
  • Indeed, the Crew - encouraged by Ashpin and Maleakos, who had been haunted nightly by the hags - decided to go after the coven, and finish was Magrora had started. Dooturr and Lumen returned, having explored much of the path to the hut already.
  • On the way, they came across two bullywugs arguing with a grayish, vaguely amphibian gray creature, flanked by two of the houndlike creatures that had attacked the Crew a couple days ago. Thanks to Lumen's sneaky magic, they were still unseen, and prepared an ambush. It was successful, and the gray creature was only able to unleash one fireball before disappearing from the fray, and the Crew cleaned up the stragglers.
  • The Crew proceeded onwards, finally approaching the hut. The environment was rather unsettling, with crowds of rats scuttling around senselessly, shadows darting about of their own accord, and figures in the Crew's likeness appearing in the branches of the trees. However, something was off when they reached the hut. The limp bodies of the hags, pierced through the chest by its branches, hung from a tree. Lumen, magically amplifying his voice, called out to the hut, as the Crew stood around in confusion. Strolling out the front door, leafing through a tome, Brucos cheerfully greeted them all.
