Mournland

The Mournland is the shattered remnants of the nation of Cyre, lost to a cataclysm in a single day known as the Day of Mourning.

Geography

The borders of the Mournland are easily distinguished by the dead-gray mist that forms a dome around the entire area. To the north, the Mournland touches against the Cyre River coming off of Scions Sound and emptying into Lake Cyre on the Mournland's eastern border. The Brey River marks part of its northwest boundary while its border with Breland is defined by the hanging mist. Similarly in the goblin nation of Darguun the dead-gray mist is a constant reminder of the border of the Mournland. To the south lies Kraken Bay and to the east the Blade Desert of Valenar, the Talenta Plains, and the nation of Karrnath.

History

Cyre

Cyre was the jewel of Galifar's crown in the heyday of the Kingdom. Renowned for its fine arts and crafts and production goods, nobles across the kingdom sought pieces of Cyran manufacture. The Entertainers and Artisans Guild of House Phiarlan were headquartered in Cyre and spurred the creative forces of the nation. It was Mishann, then scion of Cyre, who was to be appointed ruler of Galifar after King Jarot's death. By the time the Day of Mourning occurred, Cyre had been devastated by The Last War. Having a central location to all of the Five Nations, the landscape was soon scarred by the constant warfare that waged within its borders. Great cities came crumbling to their foundations and public works bore the scars of battle all around.

The Day of Mourning

On the 20th of Olarune, 994 YK, an unknown magical holocaust wiped out the nation of Cyre. There are conflicting sources about the initial start point and spread of the Mourning, but by day's end most of Cyre was covered in a gray mist and most of the inhabitants within its borders were dead or horrifically transformed. The Mourning did not seem to have an impact on undead and constructs, besides creating new undead, and most warforged also seemed to be unaffected by the mists. The lands inside the Mournland were also transformed; entire cities shifted locations and terrain was raised or lowered, or transformed into glass or other materials.

Present Day

Immediately after the Day of Mourning, fear grew that the mists would continue to spread, but after a time it became clear that the mists had stabilized and were not expanding further. The Day of Mourning led the nations of Khorvaire to call for an end to the war, and the Last War ended with the signing of the Treaty of Thronehold in 996 YK. However, the cause of the Day of Mourning remains unknown.   In the four years since the Mourning, some people have ventured into the mists, either to plunder Cyre's treasures, seeking to recover lost family or items, or to find the origins of the catastrophe. The few of these explorers who return tell of a dangerous landscape that is an unpredictable magical wasteland.[4] In recent years, warforged operating under the command of an individual known as the Lord of Blades have been known to operate in the Mournland, and launch raids on the other nations on its borders.
