Session 3: Breakfast with Ghosts Report
General Summary
The Breakfast Club, having spent the previous night back at the Different Dog, got up for breakfast and then headed over to the Grand Cathedral's cemetery, where most of the faithful of the sovereign host are interred in the city (those who can afford to not have their bodies sold into service after the departure of their soul).
Outside the cemetery, they found a round city plaza ringed with an assortment of vendors selling flowers, candles, incense, and other sundries for making offerings at the tombs of the fallen. A scorch mark on the paving stones at the center of the plaza marked the location where Anet Harr had immolated herself two years ago, bringing the sad story of the Black Mug Brotherhood to a close. Fynn D'Sivas's initial impulse, to clean the stones and make everything nice, was met with an angry vendor who claimed the club was interfering with the ability of these vendors to make a living. After an argument with the vendor that settled nothing, the club headed on into the cemetery to find the mausoleum that had been constructed for Harr.
The mausoleum they found was distinctive in that it had a neatly arrayed collection of offerings -- flowers and candles and so on -- all surrounding a central doll, perched on a shelf above the sarcophagus. The sarcophagus itself was open and empty. The club did a little poking around and determined that the mausoleum had been funded by Idozor the Mist Tiger, thanks to the help of an acolyte named Brother Ludger. A little detect magic determined that the doll itself was magic, and it appeared to move when no one was looking and orient itself to point off to the northeast. The club, always willing to follow someone with direction even if their head is filled with cotton batting, set off to follow the doll, stopping from time to time to check for an adjustment to the direction by setting the doll down and looking away. The club only stopped to take stock and gather supplies when they realized these directions were taking them out of the city. By early afternoon they were hiking into the Nightwood, following the doll's apparent direction.
The woods proved to be a formidable challenge. Even with the Doll's help, navigation was difficult, and over the next three days they drifted in a full circle, making only limited progress hiking towards the northeast. They had some probably minor encounters along the way:
- Bodies cocooned up in webbing -- a pair of them, apparently farmers who wandered too close to the woods (day 1). They were given a simple burial with above-ground rock cairns. A third cocoon was empty, the imprisoned body having apparently burst out and escaped.
- During the night, while also continuing to point northeast, the doll apparently managed to spell out the word "Cassie" in pebbles. The club has assumed that is the doll's name. (Cassie )
- They were attacked by vicious vines and shrubs.
- They were attacked by a band of goblins, who fled after about half their number fell.
- They met a band of adventurers who call themselves the Shadow Slayers. The slayers were on their way back to the city for more provisions, having been wandering lost in the woods for a while, trying to find the Wreck of the Pride of Stormhome. The club was aware that the doll was leading them in that general direction, but didn't reveal that to the Slayers. Since the slayers were expecting to be back in Korth by nightfall, they gave the last of their rations to the club to help them on their way.
- They discovered a hollow tree, which they determined was likely some sort of portal, but could not figure out how to get it to work -- they appear to be missing something.
- They met a druid named Meraud Growden. Meraud, who had apparently been out harvesting mistletoe, approached the party's camp in the early hours of the morning and asked to share their fire until dawn. Meraud confirmed the club's supposition that the hollow tree was a portal, and also warned them that the forest
Post Credit Quote: "Does it have any connection to, like, if you're a horrible parent, you're called Greygaling?" "You totally Greygaled that responsibility." "Greygale spat on trees and this is our understanding from the stories our parents have told us ..." (Turns out Greygale may be the big bad.....)
