Vortimund the Blackstaff (vort-ih-muhnd)

Vortimund, Eccentric History Professor of the Arcane Congress, The Blackstaff of Aundair.
Throughout the continent of Khorvaire, Vortimund is almost universally known as the most powerful man alive. Vortimund has never shown total allegiance to any of the Five Nations, though he has shown a general preference for Aundair. His presence on one side or the other can sway a war.
In 901 YK, he was born in Fairhaven and given the name Kell. From a young age, it was clear that Kell was a prodigy. Kell cast his first spell at ten years old. The young wizard never formally learned magic at any wizard's college. He was much more interested in magic as a tool for combat, and the wizard colleges of the early 10th century were focused almost entirely on magic as a scholarly pursuit.
From the perspective of history, Vortimund appeared without warning on the world stage in 922 YK. He quickly became an officer in Aundair's military and was the commanding officer of Aundair's first Mage Battalion.
954 YK: Vortimund became the Court Wizard of Aundair.
959 YK: Vortimund became a part-time instructor at the Arcane Congress. In this same year, he secretly joined the Mosaic Committee.
973 YK: Vortimund, on behalf of King Kaius II, crushed the Rose Rebellion.
He was a history professor at the Arcane Congress until his resignation in 994 YK.
