Dragon
Giant winged lizards of legend, dragons are innately powerful sorcerers whose avaricious nature usually gets the better of them. Their magical presence is so powerful they have been described as a “knot in the Weave”, a beast whose very presence can magically alter the world around them.
There are multiple types of "true dragons", the most common being metallic and chromatic dragons who are generally good and evil respectively. A rarer variety of "true dragons" are the psionic gem dragons, who are usually aloof and neutral. There are also creatures called dragon-kin, who are somewhat related or descended from dragons though lack some key features that define the true dragons (such as wings, four legs, and increasing in power as they age).
Basic Information
Anatomy
True dragons are covered in scales and have four legs along with two large wings. Their legs are positioned underneath their body similar to mammals as opposed to reptillians' side-sticking legs. Another trait that they share with most mammals is that they are warm-blooded. Despite them appearing to share multiple traits with mammals and reptilians, dragons are considered a category of their own.
Growth Rate & Stages
Dragons have well-defined stages of their lives:
- Wyrmling: 0-5 years
- Young: 6-100 years
- Adult: 101-800
- Ancient: 801-1200
- Greatwyrm: 1201+
Ecology and Habitats
Dragons are usually territorial creatures who live in lairs. Each dragon has a different preferred environment in which to make their lair. Through their innate magic, the area in and around a dragon's lair becomes infused with power, which the dragon has some degree of control over. Chromatic dragons are known to be more territorial than their metallic counterparts, constantly fighting among each other for power and treasure.
Behaviour
All dragons are inherently territorial and covetous. They hoard wealth, although "wealth" can mean different things to different dragons (for example: one dragon may covet coins while another collects rare art). For most dragons, there is no such thing as enough treasure.
Evil dragons are quick to attack anyone they perceive as a threat to their hoard, especially other dragons. Good dragons are more likely to attempt diplomacy, but their desire to protect their hoard is no less intense.
Another facet of the personality of every dragon is their innate pride. Even the most righteous gold dragon cannot help but recognize that they are a dragon; the fiercest creature of legend known across Ebresia. Although they think highly of themselves, even the most prideful of dragons, the red dragon, know when to retreat from combat to save themselves, even if they have to face the shame of doing so.
