Dark Seldarine

The Dark Seldarine, the pantheon of the drow, was "led" by Lolth, the Spider Queen, in the sense that she was the most powerful and widely worshiped drow deity. She dominated the drow race's lives and urged them into heavy infighting. She was opposed to varying degrees by the rest of the pantheon and did not share her power with other gods; in Lolth-worshiping city states the reign of her priesthood was absolute.   Vhaeraun, her son, was among the opposers. He had the largest following on the surface and the second largest overall among the Dark Seldarine. Lolth considered him her real rival and enemy. The others were minor players.   In truth, the Dark Seldarine were a pantheon only in a loose sense as most drow gods did not allow their followers to give any reverence to other deities; rather, they were simply a collection of gods, some related to each other and some not, whose followers were primarily drow, and thus they were bitter rivals as they clashed over the hearts and minds of the drow. As such, most drow gods, save those that acted in contrast to the typical methods of drow like Ellistraee or   Lolth's domination over the majority of drow was to such an extent that even information on the other gods was not readily accessible to them. Vhaeraun's existence and agenda was only common knowledge among surface drow and in those parts of the Underdark where the Spider Queen's power was not absolute. Eilistraee, Lolth's daughter and the only benevolent drow deity, was both on the surface and in the Underdark the subject of wildly inaccurate and wrong legends. Most of the rare few who knew of Kiaransalee believed her to be an undead madwoman who was a goddess only in her fantasies, while Selvetarm was practically forgotten. Only Ghaunadaur was capable of making his presence known or at least felt on some level by most drow.

Members

  • Lolth - greater goddess of drow, chaos, darkness, evil and spiders. Most powerful of all drow deities; dwells in the Abyss amongst the Demonweb Pits. Many people consider her to be a demon princess instead of a god in any sense.
  • Eilistraee - lesser goddess of beauty, song, dance, freedom, moonlight, swordwork and hunting; daughter of Lolth and the only benevolent member of the pantheon. She also protected dark elves who returned to the surface world.
  • Ghaunadaur - greater goddess of abominations, oozes, slimes and many of the hideous creatures that dwell in the Underdark; one of the oldest gods, potentially dating back to the primordial essence of which all things were created. One of the few members of the pantheon capable of truly challenging Lolth.
  • Kiaransalee - lesser goddess of necromancy, revenge and undeath; was originally a drow lich who fought brought lost undead of the Underdark into her host and waged war against countless surface elves on Tila'thyu during the Crowns Wars. Though slain eventually, her soul lingered on the Abyss before being recruited by Lolth.
  • Selvetarm - lesser god of warriors and slaughter; the son of Vhaerun and Champion of Lolth. He hated Lolth, though was comfortable in a role subservient to her. Thoroughly forgotten about aside from the few cults still dedicated to him through the Underdark of Tila'thyu.
  • Vhaeraun - intermediate god of drow males, surface activity, territory, thievery and arrogance; son of Corellon Latharian and Lolth. Believes male and female drow are equal and that only through working together can they conquer races seen as lesser.
  • Malyk - demigod of chaos, rebellion and wild magic; was originally an aspect of Talos created after Mystras death from the corpse a former drow lich, though became distinct from the Stormlord after the events of Fates End in 807 AS.
  • Zinzerana - goddess of assassination, illusion and lies; she was typically less malicious in comparison to the rest of Dark Seldarine, though that was often a bi-product of an ethos of 'survival by any means necessary.'
