The Cabal of The Night Sky

The desert nation of Avalon has some of the least light pollution in all of Edda. While in general, it isn't a common problem, the wide deserts and open-air give a viewer the best look at the wide, sparkling cosmos of space. It should make sense, then, that The Cabal of The Night Sky, the main religion of Avalon, spawned itself from the stars and the tracking of their travel.   The faith has a core ideology of observation, and how one can track and trace the natural world. As such, it's as much an educational institution as a religious one, and many scholars who worshiped The Cabal have made groundbreaking discoveries. One such example is Sundalis Saturnalius Premonicious, who not only developed the current 7-day week but also was the first to examine the stars in general and assisted in mapping out The Planar Star Map after scrying upon what is now known as Sundalis' Comet.   The pantheon of The Cabal, oddly enough, aren't all focused on the stars, although they all have a symbol attributed to them from the theme of the cosmos. The more common themes of the gods will be feathers, and eyes placed somewhere on their body. The Pantheon is as follows, in alphabetical order of their Clerical Domains.
  • Damhsa - The Dancer. Goddess of Dancing and Storytelling, with power over The Arcana Domain, Damhsa is portrayed as a woman with skin as black as onyx, shimmering like the midnight sky, covered with colored feathers much like a belly dancers outfit, with long sashes that never seem to end. Her main role in legends is to teach the art of dancing and pass along stories. She has eyes on her feet and stomach and is associated with the tails of comets.
  • Fitheach - The Endless. One of the more straightforward deities in the cosmology, and son of the progenitor deity Grianchóras, Fitheach is the God of The Night and Stars, with power over The Death Domain. He has no form and instead appears much like an Oort cloud with a pair of glowing white eyes, and leaves a pile of black feathers where he appears. His duties in the cosmos are to watch over souls as they are formed until they die, and accept them into his cosmic grace once they pass. His recognized symbol is a set of three four-pointed stars.
  • Taipéis - The Woolen. Goddess of Tapestries and Color, with power over The Fate Domain, Taipéis is depicted as sounding like an elderly woman, while covered completely in an ever-extending tapestry, with only feathers falling from her mouth to indicate she is speaking. Her duties are to give the world it's color from the stars, so that life can be enjoyed. Her eyes are on her hands, and she is associated with the colors of phenomena like Aurora's.
  • Iarann - The Forged. The deity of Metalworks and Strength, with power over The Forge Domain. Iarann is portrayed as a towering figure dressed in smithing robes with a dozen arms, each wielding smithing tools of various types each with a silver feather tied to the end, surrounded by the scent of smoke and iron. Their duties in the past were to forge the sun and moon, and now their duty is to create the various planetary objects in the night sky. Their eyes are on their tools, and they are associated with the phases of the moon.
  • Dumhcha - The Sandsailor. The Deity of The Sands and Lost Souls, with power over The Grave Domain. Dumhcha is portrayed as a slender figure at the head of a skiff that rows itself through the shifting sands of Avalon, covered entirely by a pitch-black shawl made of feathers, and a large hat covering their face, with eyes along the brim. Their duty is to shepherd lost souls to the afterlife, The Eternal Sky (most likely their domain in The Closer Divine Plane). Their associated symbol is the setting sun or moon.
  • Líníocht - The Scribe. The Goddess of Painting and Record-Keeping, with power over The Knowledge Domain. Portrayed as a young winged woman with long, paper-like hair, wearing ceremonial robes that the current Cabal cleric robes are modeled after, with a face painted like the sunrise. Her duty is to make records of each soul and moment that passes, and her knowledge always is inscribed on her lengths of hair. Her eyes are all on her back, along her spine. Her associated symbol is falling stars.
  • Diamaint - The Shimmering. The God of Sunshine and Clear Skies, with power over The Light Domain. Portrayed as an almost translucent figure, with no apparent eyes on their figure, with the only thing breaking the illusion of invisibility is his wide, always softly smiling mouth. However, once their sunlight hits their body, it refracts and scatters, revealing the infinite eyes within them, and the feathers of prismatic light that spawn from their every angle and corner. The second son of Grianchóras, his duties are to make sure the sun keeps shining and to shoo away sandstorms. His associated symbol is the noonday sun.
  • Ósais - The Healer. The Shifting Deity of Spring Water and Health, with power over The Life Domain. Depicted either as a female or male figure in a veil that shifts from soft green to bright blue, along with clothes made of pure white swan feathers. Their duty in the grand scheme of things is to keep the waters of Avalon clean, sifting impurities through their veil, especially in the key oasis cities. Their eyes are on the nape of their neck, hidden by their veil, and their associated symbol the sun setting on an ocean.
  • Bíseach - The Fan and Chimes. The God of Mining and Winds, with power over The Order Domain. Depicted as a lithe man with horns, that have eye-shaped holes that play calming tunes as the wind passes through them, wearing a thick cloak and wielding a hand fan made of many-colored feathers. His duty is to blow the winds across the sand, revealing where to mine, along with promising good fortune to those who feel the wind pass over them. His associated symbol is an oblong loop, most likely a solar flare, or solar wind.
  • Fuar - The Chilled. The Goddess of The Winter and Concepts of Void, with power over The Space Domain. The "sister" of Grianchóras, representing the vastness of Space and it's cold grasp. When she does appear, she takes the form of a gaunt, pale blue-skinned being, almost like a frozen corpse, clutching onto a thick peacock feather cloak with eyes on each feather. Her duty is to chill the scorching sands with the coolness of the galaxy and watch the boundary of the void. Her associated symbol is a hollow circle.
  • Fearg - The Sharpened. The Deity of Battlefury and Storms, with power over The Tempest Domain. Depicted as a six-armed figure wielding six different weapons, with wind markers made of feathers on their hilts, and eyes on their barren chest, marked with red lines. Their duty is to test the mettle of warrior clerics, also known as Mars Seers, and to lead the charges in War. Their associated symbol is an event horizon.
  • Abhainn - The Fisherman. The God of Rivers and the Hour of Midnight, with power over The Time Domain. Depicted as a lithe figure in a heavy black feather cloak, not too dissimilar to Dumhca, with a wide hat and a fishing net strewn around their arms like a shawl, with eyes in the holes of the net. His duties are to maintain the flow of time as it cycles through the rivers, especially the movement of the sun and moon, and to start each cycle over again once the hour of Midnight hits. His associated symbol is the North Star.
  • Nathair - The Serpent. The Goddess of Serpents and Satire, with power over The Trickery Domain. She is depicted as a woman dressed in high fashion (evolves with the times), but always with a feather boa, and limbs covered in snake scales, with eyes on her palms and the tops of her feet. Her duties are to ensure the safety of snake-like creatures and to critique those in power to see if they measure up to the challenge of leadership. Her associated symbol is an Ouroboros.
  • Ulchabhán - The Horologist. The God of Timetelling and Observance, with power over The Twilight Domain. Depicted as an old man, with an unassuming aura, but whenever he appears to a person, they will find themself in a horologist workshop, with eyes in the center of gears, and feathers in place of clock hands. His duties are to maintain the smooth observance of time for mortals and to enrich the senses of Seers. His associated symbol is a sundial.
  • Smior - The Chef. The Goddess of Food and Celebration, with power over The Unity Domain. Depicted as a matronly woman in a feather apron, with pockets full of treats and spices and ingredients, with eyes on the hem of the apron. Her duties are to ensure that edible food and potable water continues to flow for the people of Avalon and to bless the celebrations of the people to be mirthful and joyous. Her associated symbol is a starry sky.
  • Stíl - The Showman. The God of Ritual Combat and Performance, with power over The War Domain. Depicted as a theatrical presenter of some sort, typically what one would call a Ringleader, with eyes on the palms of his hands along with the typical position on the face, he wields a staff that can break into feathers and can turn hard as steel. His duties are to facilitate the honorable combat between warriors for show, or initiation, along with bestowing the ideal of performance for posterity or entertainment. His associated symbol is a parted curtain.
  • Grianchóras - The Creator. The Primordial Father of Creation and Destruction. They have no form and no figure, only the deep creaking voice of the universe. Their duty is to watch over the entire cosmos and combine their energy to create new life in the cosmoscope. His associated symbol is a simple set of rings like a solar system.

Culture

The culture of The Cabal of The Night Sky is intrinsically woven into the culture of Avalon, although strict followers of the faith put more importance on the concept of prophecy, and the preservation of information above all else.

Public Agenda

The agenda of The Cabal is to pass on the teachings and prophecies of the faith, along with storing the information of Edda as best they can for future generations.

History

Historically, the faith began to organize together in 9100 BC, 10,108 years before the current day, originally as a simple observatory aligning stories of faith and gods to astral bodies they observed. It was simple at first, but over the years the accuracy of their predictions based on celestial bodies drew in more followers and faithful decade after decade.  When Avalon became an official country in 1 AC, the turn of the era, it was so strong that officials within The Cabal of The Night Sky were the ones to establish the ruling class of the country, setting the precedent that would make it the Theocratic Monarchy it is today.

Worship

Casual worship of the faith is done via educational sermons on Saturn's Day, whereas higher-ranked Seers prove their faith by utilizing their skills to do their assigned responsibility under the eyes of the gods.
