The Open District

On the outskirts of the Hrinman, below the ancient fortress wall that marks the center of the Hrinman proper, lies the Open District. In this age of global trade, all are welcome in the Hrinman, but only during trading hours, and only for trade. Businesses that do not deal with the trade of goods must be run by registered Mubari inside of the Hrinman proper. Market stalls can be run by non-Mubari, provided the stalls are closed by the evening bell.   When the trade chime of the Hrinman tolls, the large trade gates are closed and all access is restricted to the merchant exits, small closely guarded doorways to the left of the large trade gates. Those exiting through the merchant exits are welcome to stay in the many hotels serving visitors, and many shills harangue the departing merchants in trying to choose their establishment.   Many non-Mubari are long term residents. They rent or own properties in the Open District, an area set aside by the Mubari senate specifically for integration of non-Mubari cultures, in small doses of course. But the one unanticipated shining star that has risen from the Open District is the cuisine. The food and drink there is the best combination of the flavor profiles from across Eilea.   Each night non-Mubari residents find solidarity in their isolation and share food, drinks, stories and goods in bars, cafes, restaurants and open-air eateries. Compared to traditional Mubari mores this nightly exchange of cultures is akin to raucous debauchery, a proper Mubari sharing the evening meal at home with their family. Those more adventurous Mubari, generally the young single populace, make a habit of taking a meal in the Open District when possible.   The culinary patchwork of the Open District first peaked in 1933 during the Nierthado prior to the Mistlands Massacre. The sheer volume of supplicants overtaxed the family cooks of the Mubari. Word spread through the markets, and flyers spread through the Hrinman inviting all to dine in the Open District. The second night of the Nierthado found masses of traditional Mubari carrying away platters of Open District food to supplement their family meals. The Open District has not had an empty night since.
