Willoughby Druffin

Willoughby Druffin did not set out to be the leader of the most notorious terrorist group in Eilea. Willoughby (he very much dislikes any shortening of his name) was the youngest son of Marcus and Eloise Druffin, the proprietors of Druffin's Sundries, a corner market established by the Druffin family in 1912 CE. All five of his older brothers found niches they could fill in the family business, but Willoughby wanted more from life than keeping the neighborhood stocked in energy drinks and zip gum. Willoughby was born in 1970 CE and at the age of 17 decided to leave home and work his way into a branded family, being fascinated by the idea of talking to an animal. To get a brand Willoughby needed to be sponsored by a family, or marry into one. Unfortunately the 80's were a very bad time in modern brand relations. His attempts to join a branded family as a servant were ridiculed. The Shrew and Jackdaw families were particularly petty and prejudiced against unbranded families, but were the only families accessible to Willoughby at the time. After three years of working as a stevedore for a branded enterprise, he was noticed by a daughter of the union chief Hugo Jackdaw. Lisa began to go out with Willoughby unbeknownst to her family. Unfortunately, one of the branded stevedores told Hugo. Lisa was sent to apprentice with the Jerboa family in a neighboring county. Willoughby was beaten and left for dead. Fortunately he was found and nursed back to health by merchant friend who had come by to check on him. All attempts at seeking justice or some sort of redress were dismissed out of hand. The trauma, the loss of Lisa, and the inability to do anything about it inspired Willoughby to start collecting stories of similar experiences, first among the stevedores, then among unbranded workers. He worked at night, meeting in bars, closed offices or dark alleys. Within a year the Order of the Unbranded had been formed and Fleas began to circulate.
