For centuries Kaifeng had been a dangerous settlement dug into the mountainous reaches of the Underdark, but every block shone with a fresh coat of paint while every yuan-ti smiled a brainwashed grin. Leena was able to notice several people with the same surgical scars as Nalthis, indicating a brainwashing program on an unprecedented scale. Maris Sissava, as Chancellor of the New Sheyuan, hosted multiple events to welcome the delegation's arrival. She offered gifts, magic items, and state secrets to prove that Sheyuan was turning over a new leaf under her leadership. During a banquet Maris made clear that part of this reform effort was to get the Ageless One's approval for her patron deity Merrshaulk. The Co-Questors were suspicious of Maris' intentions, and Eraji felt like Maris got a bit too friendly with her during a goodbye hug. While Maris and Julian Bernadotte discussed potential diplomatic arrangements (everything from a formal alliance to some form of vassalization), the party inspected their luxurious accommodations for any signs of traps or spying. Eraja suffered some wounds during the fight, but the party managed to kill one yuan-ti and take another hostage while the leader of the group escaped. This was one of the first yuan-ti they'd met in Kaifeng free from any brainwashing, and they were ready to hear his side of the story.
