A Quick Guide to Potions

Magical energy flows through everything within Caramiza and as such, the study of Alchemy or potion making in general is a very fruitful field.   Ingesting a potion can have positive or more commonly negative effects, sometimes even both. As such, each fledging Alchemist as well as any Apothecary and even some priests should be aware of the most common potions and of the means they can be created with.

Buying Potions

Potions are a very rare goods and so far cannot be created industrially. (Even though the researchers of Hamus and Sons Potion and Liquour Crafts are trying to accomplish this for years). However, most potions do not spoil easily, if stored properly. As a result, high quality potions can be bought but with a relatively high cost. A common worker wouldhave to save up for months to afford a healing salve.   There is always a market for lower quality potions as well as a regional difference, due to availability of resources and the presence of skillfull alchemists. The Fenorijten Swamp for example is rich with magical plants, making potions much more affordable than in the area of the less fertile Terkanten Mountains. The interested buyer should always be mindful of Quacksalvers, trying to peddle at best ineffective or at worst harmful concoctions.

Potions made in the Barrel of the Faithful

The Barrel of the Faithful is a unique artifact posessed by the Order of Vitukua with the ability to turn any substance stored within it into a magical potion after a while.   These potions have a remarkably strong effect but all carry the danger of being able to backfire with a dramatic effect. Interestingly, the best positive effects are achieved when using alcoholic beverages as a base substance.

Exotic Potions

Some Potions in Camariza are only available by being imported from far away markets. The merchants bringing the exotic medicine into the country are either unaware of the exact recipes or keep them a closely guarded secret.   On any larger market one will be able to buy a small assortment of these potions, for relatively moderate prices. The danger of being sold counterfeit potions is not insignificant, however.
