Hyacinthus (a.k.a. Hymee)
Hyacinthus was once a mortal youth of extraordinary beauty, beloved by the god Apollo. Their bond was one of deep affection, with Apollo often teaching Hyacinthus the arts of music and the ways of the world. However, this idyllic life was shattered by a tragic accident. During a game of discus, a jealous wind god, Zephyrus, diverted the discus thrown by Apollo, striking Hyacinthus and causing his untimely death. Overcome with grief, Apollo refused to let his beloved's spirit fade into the underworld.
Instead, Apollo used his divine power to send Hyacinthus to the mystical realm of Tir na nOg, a land beyond even the reach of the gods. Here, Hyacinthus found a new existence, free from the sorrow and pain of his mortal life. In Tir na nOg, he became a symbol of beauty and resilience, living among the other inhabitants in eternal peace and harmony. Though he missed Apollo, Hyacinthus knew that this separation was a gift, allowing him to thrive in a world where he could be truly safe.
To honor Hyacinthus in the mortal world, Apollo created the Hyacinth flower, a lasting tribute to his lost love. The delicate, fragrant blooms serve as a reminder of their bond, symbolizing both the beauty and the fleeting nature of life. In Tir na nOg, Hyacinthus continues to flourish, embodying the qualities that made him so cherished by the god of the sun.
In his new life in Tir na nOg, Hyacinthus embraced a role of gentle mentorship and care. When Apollo sent Phaethon and Cycnus to join him, Hyacinthus welcomed them as wards, becoming a surrogate father to these kindred souls who, like him, bore the weight of unfulfilled mortal destinies. Recognizing their need for guidance and healing, Hyacinthus nurtured their spirits, teaching them the value of patience, humility, and inner strength. His gentle wisdom became a beacon for both Phaethon and Cycnus, guiding them through the complexities of their pasts and helping them build a new life filled with peace and purpose.
Hyacinthus’s love for Phaethon and Cycnus ran deep, bound by shared experiences of loss and rebirth. He instilled in them a quiet resilience, a capacity to channel their passions without being consumed by them. In their moments of uncertainty, he was a calming presence, grounding them with his own experience of divine love and personal transformation. Through his care, Phaethon and Cycnus grew to see Hyacinthus as both a father figure and a cherished friend, their bond becoming a testament to the enduring strength of love beyond life’s tragedies.
Hyacinthus found fulfillment in his role, drawing joy from watching his wards flourish, secure in the knowledge that they, too, could find peace in Tir na nOg. Together, they formed a small, devoted family bound not by blood, but by the profound love and guidance they shared, a lasting echo of the compassion Apollo had once shown him.
