Eal Guild report - 0.1.18 agf

General Summary

An ode to die hard for

Guild agents were brought in as mercenaries to attend to a hostage situation in the tower of archmagus Na'ka To-mee of Eal, a rich member of the magocracy. The guild appeared set to combat magical thieves with their own magic - the team included 4 arcane spellcasters, a ranger and a fighter. They quickly found the tower was connected floor by floor with arcane elevators, and every floor was rigged to explode with delayed blast fireball scrolls. The first room was a panic room that contained the key to the elevator within its central well.

On the second floor the party encountered one of the kidnappers who spent some time opening cages containing dangerous creatures. They killed a manticore and captured the goblin alive before she could open any more cages, but found she was a simulacrum and had no reason to cooperate. Still, with the help of the telepath in their crew, the guild team discovered the kidnappers were from The Grey Guild, a group of powerful wizards that made liberal use of magic jars, simulacrums and the like to launch daring 'suicide' heists across the Eal Empire.

On the next level they encountered another simulacrum running from a vault room. The guild took the time to peer into the vault using their ability to summon a familiar on the other side of a wall. Inside were many relics and a powerful scroll of a spell they did not recognise, all hidden behind Prismatic Walls. The level after they encountered a simulacrum challenged them to a magical duel - the guild simply outnumbered him and out-counterspelled him, and he fell to his obliteration.

The next two levels the guild encountered magic lounges, and a water puzzle that they nearly overbalanced. Finally they reached the top floor where the actual crew was located. The crew had made liberal use of glyphs of warding, invisibility and illusions, but the guild was eventually triumphant, killing two of the crew and forcing the third to flee while the leader was trapped in a Resilient Sphere and silenced. The killed crew members' gear teleported away automatically as their bodies disintergrated - further sign that none of the crew members were actually risking their lives on this heist.

They finally found Archmage To-mee bound and gagged in a portable hole. Sadly most of the other hostages had perished in the fight. The archmage rewarded them for their time (mostly with the belongings of the slain hostages).
