The Arcane Order
The Arcane Order was founded in 186 PD by members of the Mythanmar Dynasty as a way to bring together the various collectives studying magic across Avon. Faral Aloro, appointed as the first Archmage of The Arcane Order, set out to build a politically neutral organisation whose purpose was to further the understanding in all schools of magic and use this knowledge to improve the lives of all those in Elantris.
Currently the central location for the Arcane Order is within the Spire District in Aeostone, along with the Glass Halls, which is the eminent college for all aspiring mages. The influence and power of The Order is significant, and its members are well respected across Elantris. Whilst they are outwardly an apolitical organisation and refuse to be involved in local conflicts they are also known to have the ear of many of those in power and their central location within Aeostone has brought some to question just how impartial they are.
The Order's primary role is in researching the arcane, with a number of special interests, including the recovery of artifacts from before the divergence and the studying of magicial distortions left behind since the Calamity. Outside of this many of the lower level members of The Arcane Order run their own apocitharies, work a herbalists or enchanters which are often partly funded or supported by The Order. Whilst more senior members of the guild will often provide advisory services to different townships or organisations.

History
Up until the formation of The Arcane Order, the study of the arcane was carried out by smaller seperate groups, information was rarely shared and some groups weren't even aware that others existed. The establishment of The Arcane Order brought many of these groups together and in fact relied on their local influence and resources to expand, though some groups decided to remain separate and continue their study outside of the purview of The Order.
During the Dividing Wars and later the rebellion against the Thamior the Arcane Order officially remained a neutral party. However, their influence waned as the Artarean rebellion continued and Faral Aloro stood down as Arch-Mage, along with other elven members of the council of mages, in favour of non-elven races. It was nearly 50 years before another elf sat on the council of mages. This change helped to build and secure their influence within the Artarean Empire and allowed them to establish the current prominent and trusted position they have.
