Barbarian

A towering Fahryte tribesman strides with purpose through the blizzard, enveloped in layers of fur and gripping his mighty axe. His laughter, like the echoes of a winter storm, fills the icy air as he fearlessly charges toward the towering frost giant, a brazen intruder who dared to encroach upon his people's sacred elk herd.   The mountain half-orc bares her fangs in a savage snarl, confronting yet another challenger daring to question her authority within their tribe. With a fearsome determination that's already quelled six previous rivals, she stands ready to prove her dominance once more, her powerful hands poised to render her opponent's resistance futile.   With a deep-seated fury, a stout and unyielding dwarf unleashes a relentless assault upon his drow adversaries. Foam flecks at the corners of his mouth as he smashes his helmet into the face of one foe, the metallic clash echoing through the dark caverns. In a seamless, calculated motion, he pivots to drive his armored elbow with unyielding force into the gut of another, a testament to the unwavering resolve of his kind.   These barbarians, a diverse array of individuals, are bound together by a singular facet: an unbridled rage that burns within them like an unstoppable wildfire. This potent rage manifests as an uncontrollable, unquenchable, and instinct-driven fury, an all-encompassing force that defines the very essence of a barbarian's being. It transcends the realm of mere emotion, embodying the ferocity of a cornered predator poised to strike, the ceaseless onslaught of a tempest ravaging the land, and the relentless, churning turmoil of the boundless sea. It is a force that beckons the primal essence of nature, drawing it deep into the core of each barbarian, and then channeling it outward through their wrath and the keen edge of their steel. This rage is not a gift bestowed lightly but a power that must be mastered, more profound than any natural emotion or physical strength, and through it, all barbarians find their unity.   For some, this potent rage is born of a profound communion with fierce animal spirits, whose essence courses through their veins like a wild river. Others forge a connection to this primal power through pacts and bonds with deific patrons, the divine essence flowing through them like a sacred current. There are those who draw their rage from a relentless reservoir of anger, a turbulent sea of frustration and anguish born from a world steeped in pain and suffering. Yet, regardless of the source from which this unbridled fury springs, every barbarian possesses the ability to harness this mighty force. It fuels not only their battle frenzy but also grants them uncanny reflexes, indomitable resilience, and the strength to perform astonishing feats that defy the limits of mortal capability. In this shared connection to their inner tempest, barbarians find a common thread that binds them together as warriors of unparalleled might.

Primal Instinct

Inhabitants of towns and cities often take pride in their settled lifestyles, as if disconnecting from nature were a symbol of superiority. For a barbarian, however, settling down is not a virtue but a display of vulnerability. Ignoring one's instincts is viewed as weakness in the eyes of a barbarian. Consequently, barbarians wholeheartedly embrace their untamed, fierce nature. The resolute bond with nature, cherished keen instincts, primal physical prowess, and unbridled rage hold profound value for them. Barbarians feel ill at ease within confined spaces and crowded environments, preferring the vast, untamed expanses of the wilderness. This preference leads to a notable presence of barbarians within the Fahrym Unions and Botar. In these untamed lands—the tundra, jungle, or grasslands—barbarian tribes flourish, their lives revolving around hunting and survival.   Barbarians come alive amidst the tumult of battle, their blood surging and rage coursing through their veins like the relentless beat of a war drum. They can enter a near-frenzied state, allowing their rage to dominate their actions, granting them extraordinary strength and resilience. A barbarian can tap into this reservoir of anger and fury only a few times before requiring rest, given the exhaustive nature of their rage. Yet, these few rages are typically more than sufficient to overcome any threats that arise in their path.

A Life of Danger

A barbarian assumes a vital role as the defender and warrior of their people, taking on a leadership role during times of war. They stand shoulder to shoulder with the shamans of their tribes as they march into battle. Survival in the untamed realms of the world is rife with danger: rival tribes, treacherous weather, and menacing creatures. Barbarians charge forth fearlessly into these perils, shielding their people from harm.   Their unwavering bravery in confronting danger renders barbarians exceptionally well-suited for embarking on adventures. Wandering is often the way of life for their native tribes, and the itinerant existence of an adventurer poses minimal hardship for a barbarian. In fact, the familiarity of this lifestyle often provides them with solace. While some barbarians may come to miss the close-knit familial structures of their tribes, just as many discover that these bonds are gradually replaced by the connections formed with the members of their adventuring companions.

Creating a Barbarian

While you create a barbarian character, think about where your character comes from and his or her place in the world. Talk with your DM about an appropriate origin for your barbarian. Did you come from a distant land, making you a stranger in the area of the campaign? Or is the campaign set in a rough-and-tumble frontier where barbarians are common?   What led you to take up the adventuring life? Were you lured to settled lands by the promise of riches? Did you join forces with soldiers of those lands to face a shared threat? Did monsters or an invading horde drive you out of your homeland, making you a rootless refugee? Perhaps you were a prisoner of war, brought in chains to another land and only now able to win your freedom. Or you might have been cast out from your people because of a crime you committed, a taboo you violated, or a coup that removed you from a position of authority.
