Protector's Vigilance
Summary
"You've seen the statues around town, yeah? Some people say that you can see their eyes watching you, especially on nights of the new moon. I don't know that I believe that silliness but I have noticed that they do seem to catch the light in strange ways."
Historical Basis
In an effort to maintain a continued presence on the island that they had worked so hard to build, the founders requested that their remains be encased in stone and cast into statues of their likeness. This practice eventually became commonplace for the citizens of Cahl Torrel although the magical costs of having a statue carved in a person's image after having been encased in stone were prohibitive, so the populace adopted the use of death masks in an apparent display of solidarity with their forebears.
Given the magical nature of these statues and the purported immense power of the individuals interred within, it is natural that a sense of reverence, even if subconsciously, is observed regarding them; sometimes extending to claims of supernatural happenings like that of having their stony eyes follow you about as you pass in the square or casting a faint glow on certain nights of the year.
It is whispered that each of the founders were not actually powerful, themselves, but that they had magical relics which they used to turn Cahl Torrel from the desert waste which they had found to an oasis. Rumor has it that these relics are buried with them.
