Emmeri Battlemage
An Emmeri Battlemage is more than a soldier. They are a force of nature, taking on scores of men as if it were child's playEmmeri Battlemages are elite magic-adept soldiers of Emmerion's army, capable of both keeping the peace and turning the tide of war once the peace is broken.
Erdantian Battlemages
An Emmeri Battlemage is equivalent to an Erdantian Battlemage in both role and rank. However, the methods by which they operate are quite different. The clothing, equipment, and training are far more standardised with Emmeri Battlemages than they are with Erdantian Battlemages. While an Erdantian Battlemage needs only to prove effectiveness in combat, an Emmeri Battlemage must be trained from childhood in one of two select academies.Qualifications
To become an Emmeri Battlemage, a candidate is expected to attend one of Emmerion's two state-owned magical academies, a student's time at the academy starting at around the age of 8 and ending at 20, taking 12 years overall.
Requirements
Emmeri Battlemages are required to be of Emmeri nationality, be an adult, and follow Libran (at least publicly). Obviously, magical compatability is required in order to become a Battlemage.
Appointment
A Battlemage is appointed at the Emmeri Battlemage's hall, situated in the capital of Emmerion. The event is known as Valentine's Initiation, and it lasts a total of one Cordaintine week (five days), occurring once every three years. The Initiation is typically undergone by around 40 students at a time, of which about 15 are expected to pass. Even if the student fails, the qualifications that they must have earned to even be eligible to take part in the trial are valuable, and they will likely have little difficulty finding employment.
The first day of the five is dedicated mainly to induction, orientation, and processing.
The second is dedicated to a non-magical phase, which includes athletics, unarmed combat, and combat with a dagger.
The third is dedicated to the magical phase, asking students to apply themselves to a variety of tasks which they are expected to complete using magic.
The fourth is unstructured free time, mostly in preparation for the fifth day.
The fifth is for the final test, in which the remaining inductees are sent to traverse a gauntlet, at the end of which is a certified Battlemage they are expected to go up against using non-lethal spells. The student is not necessarily expected to defeat the battlemage, rather to express competency and effectiveness in combat against an equal.
Responsibilities
Emmeri Battlemages are both warriors and peacekeepers of Emmerion. While their role is military first and foremost, they can also act as law enforcement personnel, and frequently do so in the capital. A small group of them are used as the Emmeri Royal Guard, and accompany the monarch/protect the Royal Palace solely.
Accoutrements & Equipment
Emmeri Battlemages, when in combat, wear a light set of steel plate armour, painted white, over a gold and white surcoat. In combat, they wear a white-painted metal face mask, and when doing non-combative duties, they wear a silver diadem that sits asymmetrically across the forehead, extending from the forehead to the left ear. In non-combative duties they retain the gold and white surcoat, which is lined with studs formed from kesselium.
In the north of Emmerion, certain battlemages are on a permanent law enforcement role, called the Northern Watch, and they wear a black overcoat with the same studs, and instead of a silver diadem, they wear a platinum collar with the symbol of the Northern Watch's heraldic crest, a black Lozenge with blue horizontal line and silver lily.
History
While Emmeri Battlemages are a relatively new invention, only going back about 100 years, the Northern Watch as a law enforcement role have existed for far longer (about 250 years), and they were merged in 1532.
