Emmeri Battlemage Rank
The basic formation for an Emmeri Battlemage when in combat is the rank. Typically composed of 8-10 battlemages, a single rank can be utilised to devastating effect in open combat. When used in a law enforcement role across Emmerion, a rank is referred to as a patrol (although when used as a patrol it frequently dips to 6 battlemages due to the low intensity of any conflict that might arise).
Composition
Manpower
An Rank of Battlemages is typicaly composed of 8-10 combatants, although in some circumstances they have gone as low as 6 and as high as 14. Each is a trained Emmeri Battlemage.
Equipment
The equipment of an Emmeri Battlemage is comparatively light. They carry an eating knife, a water flask, and wear a series of Kesselium studs along their arm to act as miniature Kesselium batteries.
Weaponry
An Emmeri Battlemage is by design supposed to fight without the use of weaponry. However, in the event of total mana expenditure, they carry a small dagger which is sheathed horizontally across the back of their waist for use in emergencies. Practically, however, they have never had to use it, and despite official recommendations, often keep it unsharpened as a symbol of their independence from external sources of defense - they are protected by their own abilities, or by each other. While Battlemages are expected to demonstrate proficiency in dagger combat to pass their initiation, there is little reason to maintain those skills once initiation is complete.
Structure
While a rank is not divided into any smaller units, and they do not group up to form anything larger, they are often embedded into regular Emmeri Cohorts.
Tactics
Emmeri Battlemages are typically deployed in battles of attrition, sent to fight alongside troops in areas expected to come under heavy fire. When in combat, they can act both offensively and defensively, capable of launching a barrage of fire upon enemy troops akin to the effect of siege weapons, but also of protecting soldiers from incoming fire. Their relatively light equipment makes them maneuverable and suitable for flanking, especially when mounted on horseback.
Logistics
Auxilia
Emmeri Battlemage Ranks are often utilised in tandem with more conventional troops such as pikemen, and can assume a role of command when doing so.
Upkeep
Considering the high pay given to Emmeri Battlemages, a rank is expensive both to form and to maintain, with a fairly large proportion of Emmerion's military spending going towards battlemages.
