The Blood Legion

The Blood Legion was the name given to the group of soldiers led by Garlan Tyler during his attempt to take control of the Kingdom of Erdantia. After Charlie's takeover, the legion became some of the most elite soldiers of Erdantia's Military, most of its soldiers absorbed into the Erdantian military. Today, they still exist under this same purpose despite another change of power, although there are now only 21 Blood Legionnaires.

Composition

Manpower

The Blood Legion has a fixed number of 21 knights, as well as around 15 support staff (4 cart drivers, 4 porters, 2 cooks, and 2 legal support staff if a squad is doing law enforcement). The Blood Legion generally travel with other units of the military when participating in battles, so logistical support is available from them.

Equipment

The Soldiers of the Blood Legion are the most well-equipped of the entire military, with some of the strongest armour, custom made to each soldier, and very well-crafted weapons, again custom made. Each member of the Blood Legion is given a horse and necessary tools, such as eating knives, basic medicine, etc. Most soldiers tend to use full-body plate armour, although Sir Alice Brooker uses chainmail and some very light plate armour over her torso and uses an arming sword. The leader, Sir Willhelm Alexander, uses a battleaxe, and Sir Clement Fletcher uses a crossbow and a war axe.

Vehicles

Each squad generally has 10 horses, five for the knights, two pulling a supply cart, and three spares. The Head Legionnaire also keeps a horse, making the total number of horses 41.

Structure

The rank given to the head of the Blood Legion is Head Legionnaire, equivalent to the rank of Margrave within the rest of the army. The current Head Legionnaire is Sir Willhelm Alexander. It is split into four squads, each led by a commander. Squads operate on a rota, with two squads assigned to warfare and two assigned to law enforcement at any one time. With knights assigned to law enforcement, the squad will be sent to a specific county, and troops will scatter across the cities in that county. When a Blood Legionnaire is on duty, they assume the same responsibilities and rank as a guard captain, being involved in decision making of the guard.

Tactics

The Blood Legion is a shock unit, meaning that it leads charges, participating in high-risk operations. The knights typically use a chaotic, skirmish-like formation, in which knights generally fight as powerful individuals rather than acting as a cohesive unit. As such, it is far more difficult for the enemy to adjust their tactics to multiple knights fighting in their own unique style than it is to develop tactics for a single unit.

Logistics

Auxilia

When a squad is assigned to law enforcement, a Blood Legionnaire has command over guardsmen and may command them as they see fit a similar story occurs when operating with the Erdantian Standing Army, in which any given Blood Legionnaire has command over Erdantian footsoldiers.

Recruitment

The Blood Legion are traditionally inhabitants from the City of Renn, although one of them is from Drago and another from Timra.

History

The organisation was first created in 1422, as the name for the band of followers that Garlan Tyler had collected in the hopes of taking the throne. After Garlan takeover in 1427, most of the soldiers in the Blood Legion were reassigned to the recently acquired Erdantian standing army. The very best soldiers, however, were permitted to retain the title of Blood Legionnaire. When the throne was reclaimed by the young Markus Tyler, the Blood Legion was not disbanded as many had expected, but instead was integrated into Markus's new regime, having all of the old soldiers loyal to Garlan expelled (and possibly executed), replacing them with some of the finest soldiers of Markus's own loyalists, which are of a fixed number, 21.

  • Reputation

Blood Legionnaires have gained a fearsome reputation both inside and outside of Erdantia. With their incredible skill in battle and blood-red armour, they have become known 'Blood Angels'. Killing a knight of the Blood Legion would be the ultimate honour, although this has only happened on three occasions (since Mark's reformation).
'I saw a Blood Angel, once. He killed ten, maybe eleven of our men before we got him down. I dread to think that there are twenty more of them'
    — Arthur Corbyn, Gaenic knight of The Most Noble Order of their Majesty

Nice and short read here. I would like to give you an advice I was given, before a new header you could put a beak-line in there, so it doesn’t look to cramped and it’s easier for the eye. Maybe if you have created them you could give links to other things mentioned in the article.

I would like you to go into more detail on their equipment. Right now it's quite generic. You mention strong armor and custom crafted weapons, but you don't write what kind of armor it is or what weaponry they use.   And I'd also like to mention that "Charlie" sticks out like a sore thumb in what appears to be a fantasy story. Perhaps this is by design, but it felt real odd.   Nice work otherwise!

Brilliant article I almost have nothing to say but, it would be nice to know some of the other positions and their currrent people and what is contained in the support staff

I really like the idea of this legion. It's neat that they were subsumed instead of dismantled. I'm interested in why 21 is the is the fixed number. Why is it significant? Like another commentor, I'm also interested in the sort of armor and weaponry they're given - like is it light armor, full plate, is it completely custom to the individual's needs and fighting style and is too varied to generalize? Also in the last paragraph, you have Mark getting rid of Charlie's loyal soldiers, and then replacing them with more of *Charlie's* loyalists. Was that intentional or is that supposed to be Mark's loyalists?

Thanks for the comment. 21 is there to allow for 4 squads of five and a leader. Armour is generally full plate armour, but it can be customized. I will fix the charlie typo.

Interesting article! Your attention to the command and logistics of the unit is greatly appreciated. It gave me a good insight into the unit as well as the technological level of the world they inhabit. Besides, I just love those crunchy details. They make fictional things breath a life of their own.

On that topic, I think you could flesh out the reputation and prestige of the Blood Legion by including quotations that express the views of their allies and/or adversaries. It would be a good way of putting some more personality in the article and give you the chance to better show the impact these soldiers have in their world.
