Academics & Student Life
The renowned halls of Hellmarfin-Goldaladar attract prospect students from all corners of the world who primarily seek to immerse themselves in the intricate art of wizardry. The teaching methods employed within the academy exhibit significant diversity. While some professors adhere to didactic oral traditions, others emphasize the study of ancient texts, many of which were authored by the esteemed Mance Rivenshale and his apprentices.
The university itself is owned, operated, and protected by the Wizards of Darburn; one of the oldest and most esoteic guilds on Eliosara. Their power and reach is rivaled by few.
The faculty members of the academy are known for their propensity to venture to distant lands and engage with scholars from other nations. Consequently, students often find themselves undertaking extensive journeys to seek the guidance of specific mentors. The university also places great emphasis on practical experience, encouraging students to partake in fieldwork. Surprisingly, there are usually more tenured professors conducting research in remote corners of the world than present within the confines of the institution itself. These professors often select their most favored students to embark on expeditions aimed at securing or unearthing ancient ruins and artifacts, which form the subjects of their scholarly pursuits.
In Hellmarfin-Goldaladar, it is widely believed that the path to arch-wizardry entails both the acquisition of knowledge through reading and the application of that knowledge through practical experiences.
Once someone has completed the rigorous admission trials and is accepted into the school, they must leave their old life behind and fully commit to their education. Students live on the beautiful campus, and study full time. The educational atmosphere is quite competitive, something that is often fostered by the faculty. Most graduates finish in eight years, but those looking to truly master the arcane study for at least twelve. Only a few of the most studies, talented, and intelligent of graduates are offered a position among the Wizards of Darburn. However, a position within the coveted guild is exceedingly rare, with only one opening every year. Some graduates go on to teach, or build independent practices, but the majority of them end up working in a nobles court as an advisor and magical practitioner.
Architecture
Mysteriously, the architecture of the Hellmarfin-Goldaladar has undergone a remarkable self-metamorphosis throughout the years. This often leaves both students and faculty bewildered and frustrated. The school seems to possess a will of its own, shape-shifting to its own whims and causing no small amount of consternation. Theories abound regarding this peculiar phenomenon; some suggest that the structure mimics the idiosyncrasies and preferences of the current Headmaster, while others attribute it to ancient, age-old magical peculiarities.
With captivating versatility, the school predominantly showcases an amalgamation of Romanesque, Norman, and Baroque styles. Crafted predominantly from pristine marble, the edifice radiates an iridescent luster when bathed in light, captivating all who behold it.
History
In the dawning years of the First Era, mages from all across Eliosara had become more and more exhausted with their constant bickering religious factions. The legal limitations they strove to put on Arcane practices were hampering progress. And so, in the 4th Year of the Third Era, a collection of some of the most powerful wizards formed a guild that would soon be called the Wizards of Darburn. And their first order of business was too build a wizarding school far from religious meddling. The western coast of Awildian, in a region known as Darburn, was chosen, as it was far away and (at the time) uninhabited. Within the first year of their formation, they had constructed Hellmarfin-Goldaladar. The intent was to build the greatest wizarding academy in the world, one where any fledging wizard could master their abilities among peers. As the years came and went, the school became known for just that. Now, hundreds of ambitious mages make the pilgrimage to Hellmarfin-Goldaladar every year, hoping to learn from the best. And because of this, many of the most powerful and influential wizards of the third era graduated from Hellmarfin-Goldaladar.
As Awildian was settled by refuges from the invasion of Iseldrania by the Mythvethyr Empire, Hellmarfin-Goldaladar strived to retain is liberty. Their greatest fear in this regard was realized when a legalistic sect of the Romith Church known as the Church of the High Orthodox laid claim to the region of Darburn. After a almost three years of diplomacy, thee two factions agreed to a peaceful agreement; the wizards of the school would lay no claim to the land beyond their grounds, and the church would abstain from any obstruction with school affairs. Due to the shrewdness of the wizards, this deal was categorically one-sided, as the wizards had no desire to claim any additional land, and only feared the church harrowing their work.
The university's name comes from its two founders, the great arch-wizards Hellmarfin and Goldaladar.
