Berrywine Monastery
Purpose / Function
At the turn of the 13th century the Faith faced a series of scandals and many involved in the business of the church sought a different way of worshiping the Divines. One group of monks sought a place of quiet spiritual refuge away from the city. They scoured maps and found a valley of seclusion with the closest settlements belonging to the reclusive Bear Clan.
Architecture
Two cloistered buildings flanking a center chapel are fenced in by a half-wall of flagstone. Basic limestone and grey mortar make up the majority of the structures and little exterior adornment is visible.
History
In the year 1208 a group of monks seeking a place of quiet spiritual refuge began construction on the monastery. The smaller dormitory was completed two years later quickly followed by the main chapel in 1211. Growing bored as most monks do they fermented the mash of blackberries found nearby and began trading it for the small necessities they were unable to provide for themselves. In 1232 construction was completed on the second dormitory to service the growing order; however, the Faith stopped directing recruits to the monastery a scant few years later. By the late 1240s most of the monks had passed away or had returned to the city.
Tourism
In the late 1250s the monks took a vow of silence while on the grounds and refuse to allow visitors, choosing instead to focus on their prayers.
