Chapter 23: Southern Horizons
General Summary
The 29th of Abarat arrived.
After a quick breakfast, the group began their journey to the Mandible Docks where The Glowerm was docked. They took a shortcut upwards to Cliffside. The tunnel was extremely slippery and steep. They thought that the chamber they were in (which consisted of a smooth, spiral path winding up along the walls with an open drop beneath them) often flooded. Eventually, after a very close call, they were able to make their way to the entrance. It was in a basement of a residential home that appeared to be carved of stone straight from the cliffside. The spray and roar of the Brilanthir waterfall seemed to drown out all else. They carefully were able to make their way up a pathway and onto the main streets of the city.
When they reached the top, they were able to see the entirety of The Maw - or the harbor of Lorisen. They saw that the Maxilla docks were being overtaken by war ships, which were also making their ascent up the side of the waterfall onto the Ansklere River. As they reached the Mandible docks some time later, and after a slightly awkward talk with Thydona, Lenihlra was able to discern that there was one ship that looked to not be leaving just yet, "The Sturgeon."
They said their goodbyes and the Ilythyrians and Inhe began to sail westward into the early morning sun. Lenihlra set off a round of fireworks above the surface of the water as a farewell to her friend. After that, Lenihlra and Jacquora found a quiet pub called "The Lavender Leach" to recoup.
While enjoying a few drinks, Lenhilra finally told Jacquora about the adventure that she and Thydona had gotten up to while searching the docks about five days previous. Lenihlra had ran into her birth mother who was none other than Elora Luthyra, youngest of the three sibings of the House of Luthyra. With that in mind, Lenihlra proposed heading to Arnsholdi to discover more about her birth family and the circumstances surrounding this. Jacquora agreed and the two left to find a ship to bear them south.
Back at the docks, the two found the ship Lenhilra had spotted earlier and joined a line that had begun to form. Finally, the captain, a half-dwarf half-human woman named Hanna Voss discussed their options with them. For 350gp each, they booked passage to the southern coast to a city called Klagensee. From there, they would make their way along the coast to Belsyr where they would find a guide to take them through the swamp known as Helvater.
They were shown to their cabin and found it already occupied by an imposing Iruxi, a Lizardfolk, named Aqiatuxl Chaxauthra Thaklu. Introductions were given all around, some more trusting than others, and upon hearing the parting bell, Lenihlra and Jacquora made their way to the deck to watch the city of Lorisen fade into the distance.
