Emaxus is currently undergoing a large entry into a new Age (and a large revision of the current Age). Consider this an active construction zone: things are moving around, getting changed, and the world's being reorganized. Apologies for the inconvenience!

Xaen, the Codifier

"As an individual, one can only achieve so much. It is the systems we build, the things that outlast us and our children, which are truly beautiful."

God of cities, agriculture, oaths, and equality, Xaen is the god upon which all good trades and contracts are signed and bound. In breaking an oath, one offends the divine will of the Codifier. Xaen often handled the organization of the Children of Yamma, and all great alliances and protectorates are sworn under their name. To be bound in partnership as equals is what Xaen embodies.   Codes, agreements, deals, and structure fall under Xaen's vigil. When equality is achieved and societies become truly fair, Xaen's will has been achieved. Similarly, bringing order to chaos and expanding civilization is something pursued by Xaen's followers, from establishing farms on fertile fields to building new settlements on the frontier.   Xaen was married to An'liceth, and the pair's domains mingled to form the foundation of mortal civilizations. Xaen represents the ideas and structures, and An'liceth represents the enforcement and defense of those structures.

Depictions, Symbols, and Names

Xaen's depictions are some of the most varied of the Children of Yamma, rivalling even Valereth's. Like the Lover, Xaen could take on many different forms; however, one thing was always consistent: Xaen was hermaphroditic. Split perfectly down the middle, Xaen is typically depicted as a humanoid with one half male and the other half female with the halves sometimes even being different races. Xaen represented true equality of all races and genders, and manifested that in his physical form.   Xaen's symbol is the Tree of Prosperity against the Shield of Equality. The Shield represents the fairness and balance that healthy societies achieve, which supports the Tree of Prosperity, which represents the growth, bounty, and beauty present in egalitarian civilizations. Simplified versions of the symbol typically focus on the Tree, and the Shield can be depicted as any type of shield.   Alongside Xaen and the Codifier, Xaen is known as the Equalizer, Prosperity, God of Fortune, and the Lord of Luck.

Ancient Home

Xaen called the realm of Gliziarial his home. He built a grand stronghold named Xaenhold at the center of this plane, around which a great city was built, a city named Xaethsmouth. Today, the city remains and continues to thrive, but the stronghold in the center lies cold and empty, and a shadow hangs over the grand metropolis.

Worship Distribution

While every single mortal in Yophas may not be a devout worshipper of Xaen, you would be hard-pressed to find any normal village, town, or city across the planes without some form of respect for Xaen, especially among government structures. Because Xaen represents the fundamental backbones of society, most civilizations dedicate their systems and structures to Xaen -- at least, they maintain the facade of doing so.    There are, of course, certain civilizations that favor Xaen heavily, and some societies who ignore him entirely. Those are a case-by-case basis, but they do exist.

Champions of Xaen

Champions of Xaen are known as Signifiers of Unity. They are rarely warriors (though they can be) and are typically great diplomats or merchants who have the potential to forge millennia-lasting civilizations and deals. One Signifier has been named in the Age of Extant, and none are known of from The Reckoning or before.
  • Ronald Brighteye Alnwick, the founder of Alnwick and the most influential creator of The Theussaun Protectorate. He brokered the original charter of the Protectorate between Theussau, Alnwick, and a handful of smaller settlements, creating a civilization that has grown into a monolith of order today.

Divine Domains

Xaen is the god of cities, agriculture, trade, and deals. Clerics who follow him tend to belong to the City, Justice, Order, Peace, Solidarity, and Sovereign Domains. Paladins of Xaen usually swear Oaths of Devotion, Truth, and the Crown.

COMMANDMENTS OF XAEN

  • Civilization is a precious thing. Cherish it.
  • A deal is only as good as those who uphold it. To break an oath is the gravest dishonor.
  • The true potential of mortals is achieved through unity and equality. Work together, trade together, and farm together, and the world will see a brighter future.

Methods of Worship

Xaen is typically worshipped by the judges, bureaucrats, and government officials who are devoted to him, merchants and dealmakers, and his priests and clerics (though those often have high overlap with the other two groups). Their devotion is typically displayed through prayers for unity and order, and making their deals, pacts, and laws in Xaen's name.

Holy Day

Xaen's holy day takes place on Vaeril 3, Tarathel, and is known as Cities' Splendor. It is a day celebrated in settlements of all sizes, in which people appreciate grand feasts and bountiful drinks, much of which is derived from fresh harvests. Larger towns and cities will also take the day to announce their plans for the coming year, such as large events or infrastructure plans.

Temples and Places of Worship

Xaen is like Alindr in the sense that he has many non-traditional places of worship. He is deified in almost any respectable place of government or commerce, but he is not necessarily actively worshipped in all of them. There may be a small shrine of Xaen in a large marketplace, while other, smaller markets may maintain an entire temple.   Most temples of Xaen are open-air plazas built around a tree. In santified temples, a cleric of Xaen will bless the tree, causing it to become blue-barked and gold-leafed. These plazas serve as places of deals, trades, philosophical debates, and legal quandaries. Most importantly, they are a place for mortals to meet, deliberate, and negotiate under the watchful eye of the Codifier himself.

Ancient Foes and Allies

In truth, Xaen and his followers despise anything that represents unholy chaos and/or a threat to society/civilization. Among the Obsidian Lords, Xaen's followers are especially weary of Laaelum and Marzak, for they represent the infestation of peace and the collapse of society, respectively. The most insidious enemy of Xaen's followers is corruption, in all its forms. From an underhanded bribe to a secret pact with Narvox, corruption great and small provides chaos and evil the tools they need to bring civilization down.   An'liceth's followers are great allies of Xaen's. Just like the two gods themselves, An'liceth's followers will often enforce the laws and strictures that Xaen's followers create. That isn't to say every town guard is a devotee of An'liceth, but it tends to be good for morale to at least think that the God of Justice is blessing the enforcers of the God of Law's governments.
