Eventyr Academy
An Academy commissioned by the crown to train elite adventurers. These adventurers, while earning their keep by aiding the people of the little kingdom, act as an insurance in case a great threat to the kingdom should arise.
Purpose / Function
Eventyr Academy was commissioned by the crown during a time when rumors of dragons and other powerful beings had begun to circulate. The academy is meant to train an elite force of adventurers to act as a protection against dangers that threaten the kingdom at large. On top of this, they are often called upon to deal with smaller scale threats, so as to earn their keep and keep their skills honed.
Architecture
The Academy was built by the finest artisans and architects that the little kingdom had to offer. It was built in a similar style to many of the buildings in hearth home, with many windows, slanted multi-level roofs covered in dark shingles, and a mixture of dark wood framing and white plastered walls. The plaster was made from crushed stone from Whitespire mountain, while the wood was pulled from Blackwood Forest. The stone used to construct the foundation and underground levels was quarried from the Dragonguard Mountains, and is uncommonly resilient. Layers of magical protections where then woven into the buildings structure to prevent damage and weathering, making many of the walls sound proof.
The building is structured around three separate wings, connected by a large central hall and a square tower. Each wing is two storied, while the central hall rises three stories tall, and the central tower rises six stories tall. The front of the building faces north. The east wing acts as dormitory hall for new recruits and adventurers. The higher level of this wing is reserved for official adventurers, while the lower level is used to house the new recruits. Both levels of the south wing are reserved for services such as the apothecary, smith, tanner, fletcher, tailor, and other skilled trades. It houses the armory as well. A couple of merchants have been given authorization to sell discounted goods in this wing. Both levels of the west wing provide housing for Senior Adventurers, as well as the tradesmen who inhabit the Academy. These rooms tend to be nicer and larger than their counterparts in the west wing. The first level of the central hall acts as an entry room, commons, and dinning hall. The provisioner and kitchens are a part of this hall as well. The second level of the central hall act as offices for trainers and Academy officials, while the third level houses those trainers and officials. The first 4 floors of the large central tower act as the Academy's library. The fifth level holds offices and housing for the senior ranking officials of the Academy, along with guest bedrooms for important visitors. The sixth level is reserved for the headmaster of the Academy, and acts as his personal study, office, and bed chambers. The underground levels of the academy house the artificers workshop and the Academy vaults, as well as the holding cells.
The grounds of the academy are laid out in a way to best accommodate training areas. To the north of the academy is set the gardens that supply food, alchemical reagents, and a pleasant place to sit or walk for the inhabitants. Between the east and south wing is an archery range and melee training area, complete with a number of training dummies enchanted with mending effects. To the south sits the combat arena and fair grounds, and further south than that (to provide adequate distance from the Academy itself) is the training grounds for spell casters. Between the south and west wings is built an obstacle course that can be magically rearranged by trainers and senior Adventurers, as well as an extension of some of the workshops within the south wing, like the smithy. The entirety of the grounds is surrounded by a low stone wall.
Finally, a ways to the north west is built a stone chapel and a cemetery. A priest dedicated to the Twin Gods lives here, and offers funeral services for the Academy. The back wall of the chapel is carved the names of every Adventurer who has met their end in service of the kingdom, and those body's that where recovered are buried in the cemetery.
History
In the year 907 AA, rumors of dragon sightings and other strange occurrences reached the ears of King Kadolan III. The King decided to commissioned Eventyr Academy, a place for elite Adventurers to be trained, so that they might protect the kingdom should it ever come under threat. It was decided that the Academy should be built near the edge of the Blackwood forest, both to isolate it from political interference as well as possible collateral damages done while training. The proximity to the Blackwood also offered a ready supply of dangers that adventurers could test themselves against, as well as a number of materials that would otherwise be difficult to come by. Construction on the building began late in the year 910 AA, and was fully completed 6 years later. It begins to operate immediately, drawing spirited and skilled persons from every race and background. The academy has done much good since its founding, and remains in operation to the present day.
