Berrigg Burrowmantle
Commander Berrigg Burrowmantle
Berrigg Burrowmantle is one of many mountain dwarves born in Alsona following the flow of refugees from the mountains into the human kingdoms. He was raised in poverty in the town of Kevos, as his parents were worked to death in the mines, while struggling to find himself a trade of his own. To the humiliation of his remaining clan, Berrigg found work as an apprentice to a human blacksmith, which at the very least allowed him to practice some traditional dwarven arts. After the death of his master of old age in 943 AF, Berrigg took over the shop and gained a reputation for solid workmanship and skill.
The human blacksmiths and artisans of Kevos resented this dwarf beginning to take up their business, and complaints were made to the local aristocracy. Charges were trumped up against Berrigg and in 982, he was arrested and sent to Wingo Mine for the purposes of prison labor, and his blacksmith shop was seized. His wife and children followed him to Wingo Mine and took up residence in the growing village outside of the mining prison along with the relatives of the hundreds of other dwarves that had been sent there. To their credit they would wait for him, despite never knowing for sure if he was alive or dead in the depths of the mine.
After nearly forty years of hard labor, Berrigg's strength began to fail him, and he grew ill. It was only the arrival of the dwarf known as Ulfgar Lighthammer that changed things for him, curing his illness, and bringing strength back to his arms. When Ulfgar helped Dalmus Grimboot lead the battle against the giant ants that encroached into the mine and then into the Wingo War itself, Berrigg was enraptured by the teachings he made of the Church of Keshush. Having never found the dwarven gods to be of much use, he was one of the first converts after the famous Ascension of Saint Ulfgar took place during the rebellion.
During the war, Berrigg served ably with the army and was one of the greatest advocates of St. Ulfgar and his Church, welcoming missionaries from the south to join them in the fighting. He even took the vows of the clergy himself, becoming the very first Cleric of St. Ulfgar. Despite his allegiance to the Church, he remained in the army of Valtkos Wingo, and was given command of the Citadel of St. Ulfgar in 1032. He has since put his long put aside skills of a smith into helping expand and develop the citadel's fortifications. He has left his mark on the fortress and continues to expand it by all means, to act as a testament to the dwarf that had saved him.
