Demetrius Rigas began his life as a pauper in Xiros. He started with trading between Alsona and the Shin Empire. The commerce and connections he developed became a major source of income, enriching himself and his family. After the Shin Empire closed their borders in 1025, Rigas became the most consulted adviser for people wondering about affairs to the south. He has a better knowledge than most outside of the Shin Empire relating to what could be going on within its reclusive borders. Despite his age, he continues to be the primary scholar on Shin affairs in Alsona, and is rumored to be able to obtain goods from the Empire, with difficulty and for the right price.
