Ekmir Zherlius

Master Ekmir Zherlius (a.k.a. Stoneside)

Ekmir was born into the powerful Zherlius family of the Kingdom of Populres. Simply by his birth as the firstborn of the house master, he was destined for greatness, and informed of that fact from the very beginning. He was given the best education of magic and naval tactics that could be offered in the vastness of Dral's Hold, with no expense spared for his training and growth. He was even granted his first warship to command at only the age of seventeen, when most that age could only aspire to being a cadet. He commanded the ship in the last days of the Third Populresi-Recfrere War, and led it to be immediately sunk. Two other ships were sunk underneath him in only the final few months of the conflict, each time being rescued by an item of magical recall. 
Despite his defeats being obvious, they were still loudly proclaimed as victories by House Zherlius. Each of these incidents were claimed to be against overwhelming foes, and acts of great sacrifice and brilliance. Although the lesser races of the kingdom have fallen for the ruse, Ekmir became a subject of much mockery among the demonkin. Determined to prove himself, Ekmir took to sea once more, patrolling the sea lanes against the Bahami Federation and Recfrere for nearly a decade. During this time he lost another six ships to battle and storms. He returned home, and was subjected to tutelage about administration and defense. The death of his father led to his ascension to the leadership of House Zherlius in 1033. 
Ekmir has advocated a policy of more ships over high quality ships and crew, and has embarked upon some of the most ambitious naval construction programs ever conceived. He has also been fanning the flames of rivalry between Zherlius and Kyakas for the past decade, and some deem him the likely culprit behind alleged assassination attempts of the Kyakas heir. He has also begun encouraging his own children to take to the seas and learn the ways of naval combat, with his own rivals snickering that its unlikely any of them could be as poor at naval warfare as their father.
