Hakam Masri
Commander Hakam Masri
Hakam Masri was born in the Bahami Federation into slavery. When he was only five years old he managed to escape, demonstrating incredible intelligence while stowing away on a Bahami corsair. He managed to stay hidden on the small ship, stealing food from the stores and convincing the crew that the voyage was cursed, as he slowly but surely eliminated them by slit throats in the night and people falling overboard. A Riveraineville patrol ship found the vessel nearly inert and adrift in the Circle Sea in 1024, with only four surviving Bahamis who were more relieved than anything to be discovered and arrested. Hakam was freed, and returned to Riveraineville itself.
Although he was briefly lauded a hero among the nonhumans of the Free City, Hakam was still mistrusted due to his race. He was adopted by a nest of lizardfolk, some of whom saw great potential within him. For the next eight years they taught him the lizardfolk ways of unarmed combat and techniques for fighting. He proved a prodigy at this style of combat, and became an important component of the occasional rough and tumble street fights that were a matter of course in the alleys of Lizardtown. When he was thirteen, however, his involvement with these criminal gangs caused him to run afoul of the Theriot family, and he was forced to flee.
He traveled north along the Sypi River, until making his way into the Sypi Confederacy. It was along the river, just into the Confederate territories, that he was discovered by a hill giant that had managed to cross under the notice of the River Watch. Despite his youth and inexperience in fighting giants, Hakam managed to outwit and slay the giant all on his own. This impressed the local River Watch commander so much that he was offered a position, and the commander paid off the debt to the Theriot family himself.
Partaking in an apprenticeship with the River Watch, Hakam learned even more about the techniques of giant fighting and how to exploit his knowledge of unarmed combat, even against the largest foes. He made friends among the Watch easily, and became popular among the hardened veterans. When he turned 18, it was no surprise when he was elevated to be second in command of Memwatch Keep. When his mentor was killed during a training accident in 1039, Hakam was promoted to become the youngest commander in the recent history of the River Watch.
