Memwatch Keep
Memwatch Keep stands proudly on a peninsula, overlooking the shallowest stretch of the Sypi River and therefore the most frequent crossing for giants. The keep emphasizes its river defenses, keeping many ballistae and siege weapons in store for holding back the onslaught. Rumors even claim the possession of even more powerful weapons, should giants break the river line in mass. The keep is massive and therefore has a sizeable civilian population within, equal to that of a small town. Many are dedicated to the salvage and stripping of gear and equipment from deceased giants, and Memwatch is known to have an infamously large storeroom of weapons, material, and armor.
Purpose / Function
Memwatch Keep was constructed to observe and obstruct any crossings that could take place at the shallowest and narrowest part of the Sypi River. Although crossing by humanoids was still out of the question, even when the river moved at a normal current, giants could easily ford the river and make their way into inhabited lands to loot or enslave. It took some time for the River Watch to determine the location, but the keep itself was created to block the crossing physically, and was constructed with Shin siege weapons in mind. These powerful weapons acted as a deterrent to the giants, and became responsible for the most giants slain of any of the River Watch forts for the next five hundred years.
Alterations
Memwatch Keep was one of the River Watch's most effective fortifications prior to the Battle of the Shards and the hastening of the Sypi River. Unfortunately in 810 AF, the fort was assaulted by over six dozen giants, and much of it was razed and demolished by the attackers. The garrison was wiped out and extinguished, with all but one of the giants killed in the process. The castle had to be rebuilt and it took nearly nine years of reconstruction for Memwatch to be restored to a shadow of its former glory. Plans were made to physically block the ford once more, but the Battle of the Shards and the increased current in the river prevented further crossings in the same scale. New siege weapons and defenses were added, but today the keep is less than a third of its original size and garrison.
