Hector Bennett
Commander Hector Bennett
Hector Bennett was born to a lower class family in the slums of the Free City of Capcora. As a child he became embroiled in local street gangs and infighting along a variety of turfs and locations. When he was only twelve years old, he was implicated in the brutal beating and murder of a prominent merchant in the city. The trial and arrests that followed Hector was one of over a dozen youths that was taken into the courts. He was faced with a stark choice: penal labor or mandatory service in the Capcoran Regiments. He chose a military life rather than one of brutal labor and servitude like that bourn by his father.
Upon entering the Regiments, he was faced with a harsh regimen of training and abuse from those above him. Despite his age, he was expected to perform equal duty among those who had volunteered instead of been conscripted. The service helped to forge him into a capable warrior, and Hector soon demonstrated an aptitude for combat, and more importantly, leadership. He was assigned to service with the Marine Regiment, being deployed onto the various warships of the Free City. The service that came along with this was intensive, leading to Hector's involvement in multiple battles against Bahami corsairs and Riveraineville privateers. These battles enabled Hector to demonstrate his skill in battle and intuitive leadership, and promotions came quickly.
After completing his set service time of five years, Hector chose to remain in the Regiments, and ultimately was sent as part of the Capcoran detachment sent to the Battle of Spider Bend. Despite the catastrophes that were inflicted upon the volunteers and ships sent into the fight by the Church of the One Sun, Hector managed to distinguish himself in battle against the spider beasts of the Losanan swamps and Sypi River. His successes there and the saving of the detachment from a local plot led to his rapid promotion into the ranks of the Capcoran officer corps. Despite everything he accomplished, in 1024, a minor skirmish against a Bahami corsair led to a severe injury and the loss of Hector's left leg. He was forced into rehabilitation, and retired from active duty.
During his time in recovery, Hector was lauded by the leadership of Capcora, held up as a symbol of the success of the judicial system and conscription into the Regiments. He married one of his nurses, and was promoted ever higher through the ranks, even past those with greater wealth and connections. Ultimately, in 1030, he was assigned the position of Commander of the Red Citadel Garrison, a highly prestigious post. He was the youngest commander to ever take command of the garrison, and he sought immediately to gain the respect of his men.
The greatest test of Hector's leadership came with the Warp of Seven. With Capcora itself mysteriously isolated by the event and the Red Citadel left out of the zone affected by the anomaly, Hector was suddenly without support or leadership. he immediately took precautions and rallied the nerves of his soldiers, as they sought to figure out what had gone wrong. When the Warp ended, the garrison was quick to respond and were the first to identify that something strange and magical had taken place. With Capcora in chaos, opportunistic raiders soon sought to raid the city, and after a series of brutal skirmishes, Hector organized and led the defenses against these bandits and pirates, holding the line against assault.
Since the Warp, Hector has become one of the most respected members of the Capcoran Regiments, and has reaffirmed his loyalty to the Lord Mayor. Some believe that should reform ever come to the Free City, Hector could be held up as a potential candidate for a lower class revolution, but he has shown no signs or indicators of being involved in such a movement.
