Ruben Chambers

Baron Ruben Chambers

Ruben Chambers' family arrived in the town of Bongo before he was born, fleeing from the devastation caused by the Northern Rebellion in the Villages. Along with numerous other halfling families, they started lives, with the accumulated wealth that they had obtained during the more prosperous years. The Chambers family had a small fortune, and had exploited the desperation of other halflings to get them to safety in Bongo. From this wealth, they reinvested and became close business partners with House Camburn, being heavily involved in smuggling, particularly people and weapons.   When Ruben was born, he was raised in the environment of smugglers and criminals, but his parents decided to send him out for a more traditional education far away from the troubles of the local world. They selected the most distant institute of higher learning they could find, Wofslar University. He learned about business and commerce, seeking ties and protection away from the myriad enemies of the family that existed in Bongo and the surrounding area. Eventually he returned, well educated, and learning much, particularly from the Church missionaries that had been prolific throughout the region.   Ruben was well schooled in the arts of espionage and duplicity in the west, and he brought this expertise to the family, all while maintaining the aura of a respectable trader and businessman. To those who knew of him, he had cast aside the criminal elements of his family, and became very popular among the halflings of Bongo. He was seen as a reformer and charitable giver, who was constantly looking out for the town's halfling population. In reality, he was the spymaster for the Chambers family business, infiltrating the Camburns and other organizations, playing them all off against each other. His skill was ultimately noticed by the powers that were among House Camburn.   In order to both keep an eye on Ruben's operations and bring his skills into their house, the Camburns selected him in 1027 as the obvious heir apparent for the position of Baron of Bongo. Loyal to the house, at least in all observable forms, he has used his position to improve the conditions of halflings in the town while dramatically expanding the business of his family, occasionally using even the guards that were supposed to stop smuggling to move goods and people across borders. He has further used his position to build connections up and down the Jakonian coastline, increasing both legitimate and illicit trade routes to his town.
