Eric

Abel

What, you think someone living his life on the run would look a bit more what? Rugged? Suspicious? Maligned-looking? I know Eric's not the white knight you wish you were, but he's not a horrible person. He's saved my hide more than once. Yes, he's stolen some things, it's not like he hurt anyone. It was just food!

  [ . . . ]

I don't care if you like outsiders; you will not belittle him like that. Eric's done more for me than anyone else in this family. Now ice up that arm of his or I'm bludgeoning you next.

— Jorden, speaking to Daniel.

He really shouldn't have been this lucky. He'd been searching all his life for a place he could stay, a place he could return to, a place he could call home. And of all the people he could fall in love with, it'd be this Zarenian brute. Eric should've known better. This was probably a trap.

Until it wasn't. Jorden never asked anything of him. That one fateful day, Jorden asked what he would do after the war. Eric didn't have an answer. His sister was gone and married now; it would be poor taste for him to go with her. He always had to find something for himself, being a nomad and all. And that was how he got an invitation to Jorden's house. After the war, they would bring the Carona family back together again, Eric included. Eric had never thought of himself as being a family man. Jorden disagreed.

They first met when Guardians brought martial law down on Zarenia. Eric was supposed to retrieve the Carona partriarch (Jorden's father) from danger. Unfortunately by the time Eric arrived in Reasal, Jorden's father had already been shipped off to a labor camp. So he sprung the remaining Carona member out of house arrest. Unfortunately, the irate, ill-tempered farm boy didn't have the information the resistance leader wwanted. But what Jorden did have was a talking rock. By working with it, he could to some extent to produce a form of magic. Jorden and Eric were then tasked with recruiting more Spirits for the Promise.

Personal history

Growing up in the slums of Aça's Sancignico does something to a boy. Born Abel Leite, he and his older sister Rosana struggled to care for each other as their parents fought losing battles against drug addictions. Once they were no longer able to fund their drug abuse, their parents sold Abel and Saren to their dealer. Taking advantage of hungry brats, the dealer promised them a meal for every gram they sold. In a city where child mortality was high, no one would blink twice at another dead child.

Abel and Rosana made a tragic mistake one afternoon and accidentally bumped into the district constable, who promptly arrested them. The old man saw, however, two scared children being used for money and took them into his care. While a constable certainly didn't make much money, the lifestyle was considerably more comfortable than being borderline homeless. Wanting to make their new lives as enriching as possible, the constable decided renaming the children would be a good start. And so Abel became Eric, and Rosana became Saren.

For a long time, Eric coveted power. He'd had a taste of it when those same abusers came to him begging for just a pinch of his wares. He used them the way they used him. Cast them aside with nary a glance once they were worthless. And here, this man could just waltz into his life and change his name. He had to admit, he could see some sense in his reason. New name, new leaf, new life, said the constable.

Eventually, policing became too much work for Tome and he returned to his family's jewelry business. Eric and Saren became apprentices in the family shop. Saren was incredibly dextrous with her hands, and Eric didn't mind working out deals with their suppliers. This brought him into frequent contact with Zarenians, who remained polite though closed off.

It was through them he received updates on the Alanuan crackdown on the region. He never did like those pompous overlords. Tome eventually fled to Zarenia after the Guardians accused him of tax evasion, which was how they ended up as benefactors of the Zarenian rebellion.
