The Convex Entities or Ætherials

Overall

Convex Entities otherwise called Ætherials, Æthereals, Aethereals, Ethereals, Spirits, Djinn, Kami, Fæ, Daimon, Dæmon or other such names. Are the native inhabitances of The Convex, they've existed there since the first thought and evolved within The Convex itself. Feed and thriving off of the Quintessence spawned by mortals. They are composed of two groups, The Cogitazons and The Vivolim, both of them can manifest into the universe as apparitions if the right conditions are met. They'll often be categorized into two groups of Convex Entities Euethereal (A:gato:ethe:re:al) and Cacoethereal (Ka:co:ethe:re:al), they are Cogitazons whose purposes are diametrically opposing each other due to their opposing influences spawned from Quintessence.   Euethereals were commonly viewed as good Convex Entities, or at least non-malicious, able to bestow protection and guidance to those they trusted. The most well known Euethereals acted as guardian angels or house spirits who would follow members of family bloodline from the hour of their birth until the day their bloodline ended. Euethereals ensured good luck, health, and wisdom upon those they favored. If the Euethereals are viewed as good Convex Entities, then by extension Cacoethereals are seen as evil. A Caco-Servitor is said to be a malevolent spirit, or in just unfriendly, often playing tricks upon mortals and leading them astray. The worse of which are deceitful Cacoethereals that delights in its lies and plagues of misfortune on others. They'll often torment and cause harm to mortals by way of malicious deeds. Poisoning food, killing livestock or laying vicious traps underfoot.   These name classifications shift depending on the culture they inhabit; on the Trinity Isles of Dracocinis they call them 'seely' which means "happy", "lucky" or "blessed" and 'unseely' meaning "unhappy", "misfortunate" or "unholy". Many even view them as equivalents to Angels and Demons, especially on Dracocinis.

Creation, Persistence and Expulsion

These creatures that do not naturally exist in reality as they're beings that are made wholly of Quintessence/Magic from The Convex; created by strong emotions and ideas. This allows them to have a tangible existence within The Convex and maintains them when they feed off of lesser thoughts. They can manifest into reality via a strong influx of Quintmateria/Miasma which allows them to create physical bodies for themselves and impact physical reality as they please.

Cogitazons

The Cogitazons (Singular Cogitazon, Latin Cogita(tio) "thought" + zo (ζω) "living", Literally "Living thought". Phonetics, ) otherwise called: Sképsizon, Living-thoughts, Potenati (Singular Potenatus.) or Tulpa. They are all born from the minds of sentient beings in The Convex, formed to act as Ætherial personifications of strong thoughts and ideas. They're often Quintesential beings that can either be a singular embodiment of a person's thoughts, or from a mass collective of ideas that has spread throughout a culture and religion.   (Cogitazons borrow a lot from the Tulpa concept. Which is the paranormal act of an object or being that is created through spiritual or mental powers. In real life, some use the term to refer to a type of willed imagined being which practitioners consider to be sentient and relatively independent.)   Some of Cogitazons can act as anthropomorphic personifications of certain ideas and beliefs which make the Cogitazons parrot the same concepts and perceptions that make them. However, though they're embodiments of these concepts, they're not always wholly dominated by a simplistic interpretation. As many have lived so long that they've begun to rationalised their existence, these are called Egregores and Deiformae, Cogitazons who have formed individual ideologies around their independent beings. Despite many of their ideas being seemingly rational thoughts and philosophies, they're are indisputably insane. As the ideas they propose can quickly become irrational and be driven the furthest extremes due to their innate nature of their existences as Cogitazons.   Cogitazons are not always depicted as humans. More often than not they're depicted as abstract shapes that are not always defined as humanoid, most prefer to take the forms of animals and live as they would. Though some, like ideas of cherubim or imps, will have more commonalities with a human appearance than anything else but will still carry distinctions that separate them.

The Cogitazon Paradox

The shapes and appearances of most Cogitazons are actually the result of human thought and imagination, they exist in certain forms and places because of the tall tales of humanity. Why this is possible is because like most things made of Quintessence/Magic, a Cogitazon's appearance can be manipulated by the perception of a person's mind. And through the collective conscious of a population, their forms can be limited if enough people believe in a certain interpretation.   Some theorise that it's possible to rid the world of the Cogitazons by eliminating their inspiration, however many think this impossible due to The Cogitazon Paradox Loop. Which states that, 'If a person believes a type of Cogitazon to exist, then it shall be made real by Quintessence/Magic. Once seen and proven as real by other persons; proving the Cogitazon as false becomes nigh impossible.' So to counter them, storytellers and experts decide to detail weakness and flaws in them if ever the need arises to exorcise them.

Vivolim

The Vivolim (Singular Vivolam. Latin Viv(ere) "Live" + olim "formerly", Literally "Formerly living"), otherwise called: Spirits, Ghosts, Shades etc. Are the manifestations of souls that are pulled into The Convex upon thier deaths, they are ghosts that are able to exist in one of the many meta-material planes of existence which are the most stable areas of The Convex. The Vivolim feed off of the asubstance called "Pathos" which are thoughts and emotions of the mortals, but in desprate times they will resort to feeding off of Cogitazons or other Vivolim as well.   Vivolim are almost always depicted as humans or humanlike, this is called a Psychforma, the "spirt shape". But the circumstances of their deaths and perception in the mortal world may redefine their appearances, especially if the Vivolam's death was traumatic and violent. Vivolim cannot exist in The Convex forever. Many are fleeting existences that can only exist so long as they have the mental fortitude to maintain their consciousness, or someone is alive to remember them, even if they only create Imposters in that Vivolam's image to sustain them.

Exorcism

Exorcism (from Greek ἐξορκισμός, exorkismós, "binding by oath") is the religious or spiritual practice of evicting a Cogitazon or Vivolam from a person, animal, or an area, that is believed to be possessed by them. Depending on the spiritual beliefs of the exorcist, this may be done by causing the entity to swear an oath, performing an elaborate ritual, or simply by commanding it to depart in the name of a higher power.

Common Manifestations of Cogitazons

Servitors

Also called Familiars and Totems. Servitors are created by the the conjurer for a specific purpose, that appears to operate autonomously from the conjurer's consciousness; i.e. as if it were an independently existing being.

Egregores

Egregores, also called Personifications, Avatars, Enlightened Genius, Ka and Fae (Fay), are complex Cogitazons that form based upon a collective of ideas shared by a group. Egregores are able to exist independently of the thoughts that originally birthed them, some have existed for so long that they have effectively evolved within The Convex itself. The most well known Egregores would have forms based off of our different myths and legends, although many in the far future are now vastly different from what they once were. Whilst some have gone extinct but in their absence new Egregores have been born and populate The Convex. Some Egregores have lived long enough to undergo Apotheosis and become Deiformae.

Literals

Think Literals from the comic Fables.

Imposters

Imposters also called a: Doppelgänger, Vardøger, Etiäinen, Dmuta, Qareen or Fetch. They are Cogitazons based off of a warped perceptional aspect of a person, Xeno or Elohim, whose image and deeds have affected the material world so much that they've manifested in The Convex as Cogitazons. But Imposters are more like faulty copies of the people they were based off of rather than actual Vivolim, as Imposters are nothing but unintelligent parodies compared to a Vivolim.   The Imposter's forms are affected by two things, the people who know of them and the personality of the person they were based on. Resulting in many Imposters actually existing as simple masks of those they're meant to represent. As long as their perceptions are maintained they will never fade into obscurity. Because of the manifestation of Imposters in The Convex, their essence can grant the people they're based off Quintessential/Magical powers from The Convex. Which also applies to the Vivolim aswell, acting as a food source. A person can have multiple Imposters of themselves if they have enough influence to spawn them.   Many Imposters are the actually personas to Elohim. They are adopted by Eldritch beings that they use to influence and manipulate large swaths of lesser beings into giving them Quintessence/Magic.

Shadows

Think Wraith the Oblivion

Common Apparitions of Vivolim

Possessors

Invaders and skin-stealers

Wisps

playful tricksters and children

Poltergeists

ghosts that haunt a place or thing

Wraiths

wrathful and violent

Banshees

Restless and distraught

Common Roles:

Unlike the types of Cogitazons and Vivolim that can manifest and spawn, the roles they can take on are almost always universal.

Guardians and Demons

Guardians, also called: Watchers, Angels, Mu'aqqibat, Haltija are Convex Entities who are deemed to protect the people they're charged with. Guardians would protect and guide their principal, as well as blessing them with some of their Quintessential/Magical power; they could and would follow their person from the hour of their birth until the day they die. They were often confused with an Eu-Servitors, but unlike Eu-Servitors are free to leave the protection of their charge any time they wish. However, most Guardians swear oaths to their Guardianship and will not break it without just reason.   Demons, also called: Devils, Satans, Iblisians, Cacodemons are Convex Entities who do the exact opposite of what Guardians do.

Genii Locorum

Genii Locorum (Singular "Genius loci"), otherwise called "spirit of a place”, are the Convex Entities that are present in an individual place. The most common of which are Elementals or Haunters. The term was applied most often to individual places not generally known; that is, to the smallest units of society, settlements and homes. Houses, doors, gates, streets, districts, tribes, could have its own Convex Entities.

Elementals

Elementals are Convex Entities who manifest appearances and powers of the natural elements by choice, a lot of Literals manifest and take on roles as Elementals.

Psychopomps

Psychopomps (Greek ψυχοπομπός, psychopompós, literally 'guide of souls') are Convex Entities whose responsibility is to escort newly deceased souls from Earth to the afterlife. Their role is not to judge the deceased, but simply to guide them.

The Eight Virtues and Vices

Some of the most recognisable are the four Cogitazons who are the lesser amalgamations of the Eight Deadly Heavens; all of them representing their assigned Vices and Virtues. They're so well recognized that their greater concepts have ascended beyond the limits of a Deiforma, able to exist as Outer Gods in the Convex.
  1. Lust = Chasity
  2. Gluttony = Temperance
  3. Sloth = Diligence
  4. Envy = Kindness
  5. Greed = Charity
  6. Wrath = Patience
  7. Pride = Humility
  8. Despair = Hope
Think of them like this; Greed is selfish and wants things that are worth something to him, whilst Charity is selfless and gives things that are worth something to others. An example of the ideology is as follows: Greed believes that the accumulation of wealth, power and status regardless of it's inherent value or moral acquisition is good. Because Greed forces people to strive to take the opportunity of success and rewards those that wish to be recognised by their peers as kings, regardless if they were earned or not. Greed believes that if you want to take something from someone, it is your right to take that thing because it is worth more to you than it is to them.   Charity believes that such things are temporary and fills only a bottomless void, a void that only expands each time something is dropped in its depths. Because whilst people may recognise you if you're above them, these are only fleeting memories that shall fade if you cannot truly give them something to remember you for or by. Charity believes that If you give someone something with more substantial worth than gold, then even when they're old and grey, they'll still be able to remember your worth to them as long as they keep it.
