Palm-Comm
A communication device in the palm of your hands!
Utility
Used to facilitate communication with people quickly. Originally designed for phonecalls but now does phone calls, text messages, and even holographic calls. In the late 380s to the early 400s, it had what our world calls 'facetime' but later developed into the holo-calls. It also is used for social media and other things, very similar to the old Earthen smartphone.
Social Impact
Unfortunately, over the years, people have become addicted to their phones, just like what happened on Earth. Having so many apps available to a person at once can be exciting and results in dopamine being released. Of course. We're all looking for that drop of dopamine. May I have more dopamine? Please?
However, there is more help available to help negate this addiction to their devices. Some things used to help with this is to buy models of phones that only allow calls, texts, and sometimes holo-calls. Other models have the ability to download limited apps. Others are made with timers to let a user know when it's time to hop off of those models, and brings them to a gentle stop instead of a sudden stop. There's also addiction therapy. Lots of ways to help PalCo addiction.
However, PalCo addiction is not quite the same with neurodivergent and disabled folk. For them, it's a necessity in order to communicate with people since socialization can be far more difficult for them. For them, it's their socialization. So the same addiction limits do not apply to disabled and neurodivergent folks.
Hirosakane Kiri of Hoseki. She built it based on old schematics of human cell phones with Enarian twists. This was made to allow for easier communication.
Access & Availability
Widely available to as many people as possible, as it is far easier than sending a carrier owl—which was used in the old days. Granted, owls are still used today in secrecy.
Complexity
Palm-Comms are not inherently that complicated. It has circuts (electrical and miasmic), hardware, and software. Granted, as the technology progressed, more hardware and circuits were added. Because of course that's what happens when technology progresses.
