Yuêndàn Mo

The Yuêndàn Mo is a myth of Xinghongese culture. It is said they appeared in ancient Xinghongese texts in the Epic of Sunxien. They are inherently not evil, typically considered trickster spirits. However, some do take the form of evil spirits if their fěn, or miasma, is corrupted. In the case of the Yuên-dàn-mo in the Epic of Sunxien, the creature's fěn had been corrupted far beyond recognition.

Often in legends of Yuêndàn Mo, the creatures take on the form of innocent young girls—typically either eathyns or elves—in order to pull their pranks. Otherwise, their forms are of that of a nine-tailed fox-like creature, either snow white like an arctic fox or russet.

The Yuêndàn Mo has alternate names such as Yuêndan (Fox Spirit), Yuên-xin (Immortal Fox), or Xiweiqu Yuên (Nine-Tailed Fox). Additionally, this spirit can be found in Hoseki, Jiyeong, and even in the islands of Kidul. They were not originally worshipped until the late Tièn Dynasty, when Empress Shunwei had a dream of a corrupted Yuêndàn-Mo threatening to take power away from her unless she worshipped the fox spirits. With that revelation, she declared Xinghong would worship the Yuêndàn Mo. Granted, when the other Yuêndàn found out about the corrupted one doing that, they did punish her severely but unfortunately it was too late and there were shrines dedicated to the fox spirits dotting the country. On the plus side, they got to be officially recognized.

Aside from the occasional evil trickster Yuêndàn, most of the time they just prefer less serious tricks like turning into a beaitiful girl and luring people into sexual acts (look, they just want to have a bit of fun ok?). But do keep an eye out for that one evil trickster fox spirit. Sometimes they come out of nowhere and next thing you know, you're starting a new religion out of fear of the trickster! Oops.
