Coming from a decent family of tailors in Onigashima, she is engaged to Wada Ujiharu at a rather young age.
His family cancels the union after an accident makes it impossible for her to bear children, although the two had fallen in love with each other.
Her parents both die a couple of years later, leaving her to carry the business.
While she is grieving, she encounters two young children, Akiyuki and Saki, who are running from mercenaries. She helps them hide their true identity by taking them in and disguising Akiyuki into a girl named Hinata.
The children start helping her when a blond boy washes up on the shore and Mei rescues him as well, naming him Ren and teaching him the language and culture of Mukoku.
