Myrdens

Myrdens (derived from Myrdenia) is the capital city of the Southeastern Duchy of Lithander. It is located on the Western half of the island of Mysoros and its influence dominates the entirety of Griffyn Coast. With a population of over 50,000 it is by far the largest settlement in Lithander, though it pales compared to nearby Pellas.   Myrdens is not spared the watchful eye of the Church of Illumination, though they do not have a large presence. A large church adorns the center of the city, and its plaza is the site of regular burnings of witches and mages. It is an open secret that the Duke hunts magic users for his fears of their power to overthrow him, whether real or imagined. The Church is either not aware of this, or turns a blind eye.

Government

Like many cities in Albion, Myrdens is governed by a town council which has its roots in Imperial times. In the case of Myrdens however, the local Duke's control is famously absolute, and everybody knows the town council pays nearly constant lip service to his Grace.

Industry & Trade

Myrdens is the center of smithing of weapons and armour in Lithander and produces above average equipment. This is reflected in its town guard and night watch, who are heavily equipped when compared to their equals in other cities. Further, Myrdens is the only major port in the region and often exports fur goods from nearby Naporia or Dwarven tools from Bal-Gorund. It is here that the resources of Lithander such as salt and ores are shipped off to the rest of the world.

History

Myrdens was settled as a fortified colony during the Imperial Age, to act as a bastion against pirates that were forming on the Southern coasts of the Sea of Azuth. Over the ages this has resulted in the establishment of a well-respected military academy, which many nobles of Albion send their sons to. The city was relatively unharmed by the Coming of the Comet, save for a large flooding after the creation of the Alvus Sea. Its distance from the impact was a double-edged sword however, as it heavily relied on Imperial food imports to sustain itself and its large soldier population. The famine that ensued meant that Myrdens never recovered its population to Imperial Age levels.
