Hollowborn
Throughout most of recorded history, hollow births have been a tragic occurrence across races, cultures, and geographies.
A hollowborn, also known as a husk or soulless child, is essentially a child born without a soul. All the physiological functions necessary to sustain life are present in the child, but they are devoid of intelligence and personality. They do not speak, cry, or otherwise exhibit any signs of sentience or even a will to survive. In most cultures, hollowborn children are killed and disposed of swiftly after birth.
Some scholars believe that hollowborn are the result of imbalances in the Manaflow and the cosmic redistribution of souls during reincarnation. Some speculate that the outsize presence of mana within Manaborn cause this imbalance, a belief which often fuels cultural feelings of negativity toward Manaborn.
Many believe that the total number of hollow births has been gradually increasing over the past century, though a lack of global (and often regional) record keeping on the topic prevents verification.
