Personal history
Hermes is the son of Zeus and the nymph Maia.On the day of his birth, Hermes lived in a cave with his mother, but he wanted a better life for them than living in a cave for all eternity. And so he invented the first lyre from the shell of a tortoise, and stole Apollo's sacred herd. To prevent Apollo from finding his herd, Hermes reversed the direction of the cattle's hooves. When Hermes returned home, he tried to act the part of an innocent baby, which did not fool Maia. He than explained to his mother that this was all part of his cunning plan to get him and his mother respect and honour, insteaf of living in a cave, and hiw stealing Apollo's herd was simply a way to get him noticed by Olympus. After fooling Apollo in his attempts to find his herd, Apollo took the matter to Zeus, who found it hilarious. Zeus told Hermes to guide Apollo to his cows, on the way there Hermes wins Apollo over by playing his lyre. Apollo is so enchanted by his performance that he promises Hermes will be the messenger of the gods, and that he and his mother will be honoured among the Olympians. Apollo trades his role as herdsman for Hermes's lyre, and they both return to Olympus. In exchange for Hermes promising never to steal from him again, Apollo gifts him his Caduceus staff.
