The Ruins of Ádhmhar Dún

Once a great fortress held by Clan Spartach of the Ceilic Region, now all that is left of is ghosts and rubble. All thanks to the Venatorian Empire and their holy emperor, Vigilo Angelius. The Venatorian Empire is now using Ádhmhar Dún as a symbol of how resistance against the Empire always results in death, no matter the bravery or cowardice of those who oppose the reign of Angelius.

Purpose / Function

Ádhmhar Dún was made so long ago that its original purpose is no longer known. Clan Spartach used the fort to house the majority of their main base of operations. It was where the chief and the archdruid convened, and where most of their best warriors were kept.

Denizens

Now that the living of Clan Spartach are all gone, the Sluagh have gained entry to the now empty fortress, and wander it aimlessly, with sorrow and a strangely thoughtful demeanour. The Sluagh are ghosts that wander the Ceilic Region without purpose and can become aggressive at times and try to snatch the souls of the living. They have a strange aversion to gold, and an immunity to the cold. They cannot be touched by most mortal materials, with gold and silver being the main exceptions.
"The Sluagh in Ádhmhar Dún no longer wander outside of the fortress. Maybe what these lost souls were searching for all this time was simply a place to call home?" ~Church Paratir, Grand Archivist of the Authenian Archives.

Valuables

There are rumours that the Spartach treasury was hidden deep within Ádhmhar Dún, waiting to be found, though most scholars agree that Clan Spartach did not have enough treasure to warant an extremely well hidden treasury.   The banners that can be found in Ádhmhar Dún are surprisingly valuable, due to the fact that very little trace of Clan Spartach remains. Many scholars, collectors and historians are willing to pay mercenaries and adventurers fair sums of money to recover these banners.

Alterations

Ádhmhar Dún was once a durable fortress that many thought to be practically indestructible. Unfortunately it seemed to crumble easily enough when exposed to canonballs and ballista bolts. The walls of Ádhmhar Dún are now little more than rubble and powdered stone. The great steel gates that once protected the fortress are now mangled thanks to the battering rams used by the Venatorians in order to gain access to the stronghold.
"I shall remember the battle of Ádhmhar Dún fondly. There is now better way to weaken the resolve of your enemies than to show them that not even cowering behind their walls will save them." ~Commodus Formido, Legate of the Venatorian Empire.

Architecture

The walls of Ádhmhar Dún were made of granite bricks and clay. The main stronghold was made of limestone and small amounts of quartz. A wooden frame was built into the main stronghold for structural support. Green banners depicting a glaive with roots on the hilt were scattered throughout Ádhmhar Dún, as they were the symbol of Clan Spartach.

Defenses

The walls of Ádhmhar Dún were coated in thick, razor-sharp thorns that were supernaturally grown by the druids of the clan. This makes climbing the wall impossible.   There were plenty of arrowslits found in Ádhmhar Dún. These allowed archers to shoot arrows, which they often poisoned, out at their enemies without leaving cover. The vast majority of these arrowslits no longer exist due to the collapse of the walls of Ádhmhar Dún.   The Sluagh that now roam Ádhmhar Dún are to be considered a danger to any mortal that finds themselves in the ruins of Ádhmhar Dún. The only mortal metals that can harm them are gold and silver, and they are resistant to frost magic.

History

Ádhmhar Dún was not made by Clan Spartach, they merely found it abandoned and decided to claim it for themselves in 955. For almost four hundred years it was owned by Clan Spartach with very little in terms of opposition. The fort had successfully been defended from the major threats that the Ceilic Region has to offer, from rival clans to supernatural beings.   This sense of security lasted until 1321, when the Venatorian Empire declared war on the clans of the Ceilic Region. While at first the Venatorians were focusing on small outposts and camps, the eventually turned their gaze upon Ádhmhar Dún. At first they started sending small vanguards to probe the defenses, but very soon Clan Spartach had to contend with the full might of an invading army. Powerful seige machines were used to destroy the walls and watchtowers of Ádhmhar Dún, crippling the defensive capabilities of Clan Spartach. Soon after, legionnaires and Venatorian dire wolfhounds were being deployed to slaughter all that they could find, and finally, the triarii and auxilaries were being used to breach the defenses of the stronghold so that the chieftain could be killed.   By the beginning of 1322, Clan Spartach was no more and Ádhmhar Dún was a cold ruin of a dead people.
