Derric Engleden was a hero of the
War of the Burning Forests, earning many accolades and honorifics. After the war he and some of his companions traveled the world together known as
The Heroes of Raven's Claw. They plundered lost tombs and sought adventure across Erellion.
Wanting a home base for him and his adventuring companions Derric started looking for a suitable location. After a very profitable adventure Derric decided to settle down. He found his home in the area between
Port Tavalo and Wayhill between the
Shadow Mountains and
Goblinkin Wood. It was here that he founded the town known as Engleden's Hold as a frontier town and stop over for those traveling between Wayhill and
Port Tavalo .
The town was prosperous and grew for several years, until
Asar Vargas came to
Engleden's Hold with a host of mercenaries at his command. Asar was sure that Derric had cheated him after that last profitable adventure and came looking for what he thought was his.
Asar attacked the stronghold repeatedly, retreating into the hills after each attack. Eventually Derric took several of the townsfolk and hunted Asar back to his camp at the base of the
Shadow Mountains. Here they had their final confrontation and Asar was slain along with his band of mercenaries.
Casualties were heavy for the people of Engleden's Hold as well, with only a handful returning including Derric Engleden. However Derric had suffered a mortal wound and died two days later.
In honor of their founder they buried Engleden's remains in the tomb where he fought his last battle. They placed an eternal flame above his final resting place, so that all who visited may find strength in the wilderness.
Before the town was abandoned, several townsfolk took a pilgrimage to the tomb to light a lantern from the eternal flame and bring it back to town for the winter.
History
The two met during the War of the Burning Forests and adventured together as part of The Heroes of Raven's Claw . After several adventures, they decided to go their separate ways, Derric wanting a quieter life while Asar craved more adventure. A few years passed when Asar showed up at a small hold that Derric had established in the Wayhill region. It was here that Asar accused Derric of shorting him on treasure. The two argued about it and no resolution was reached, and Asar left fuming.
Shortly he would return with a band of mercenaries and attacked Engleden's Hold repeatedly, claiming that treasure that belonged to him was being kept there. The hold repelled the attacks and eventually Derric took a band of willing men to search for Asar's stronghold.
They found and confronted Asar who was hiding out in an ancient crypt a couple of days travel from Engleden's Hold. Asar and his men were defeated. The group from Engleden returned home but they too had taken losses and two days later Derric Engleden himself succumbed to his wounds.
