Shadowshore

Overview

Although relatively small, Shadowshore is perhaps the most notorious of Sasserine’s districts. This strip of land nestled in the shadow of Champion District has long been a haven for thieves, thugs, and criminals of all kind. Generally, the only people who live here are those poor enough that their homes hold no attraction to thieves or those who can ably protect their property by wit or muscle. The city watch has all but given up on Shadowshore, and as long as nothing particularly destructive arises from the district (such as fires or riots) they generally leave it to govern itself. The representative noble of Shadowshore changes more often than any other, as the post is traditionally held by the family (or even the individual) strong enough to protect it from his enemies.

Parrot Island

Just south of the dark shore is a small island of rocky walls that jut up higher than most ship decks. The island is scattered with palm trees and thick shrubs. The island is home to many parrot including the golden parrot. The island is left to its owner the parrots.

Demographics

Shadowshore is where the dregs of Sasserine seep to. If you grew up here, you had a rough childhood, and may have been forced to kill someone in order to survive. You’ve certainly seen your fair share of dead bodies; they turn up often in the alleys or under the piers. If you’re not the thuggish type, you either spent a lot of time hiding or developed a knack for fighting dirty. You may taken under the wing of one of the few semi-legitimate businesses to operate here, but more likely you’re a true child of the streets eventually joining one of the gangs that controls the streets in Shadowshore. Faith is hard to come by here, but if you’re a cleric you probably worship St. Worgul , and you know that the god of thieves has some presence within these drooping slums.

Government

Dawn Council Representative

Currently, the representative of Shadowshore is Emil Dracktus —certainly an assumed name. Rumor holds that the Dawn Council would rather have someone less crude and more reliable in this post. Someone like Vico Bevenin of the Amedio Trading Concern, perhaps. Yet for now, no one (Vico included) has made a move on Emil.

City Watch

The law is enforced by the city watch that operates out of a garrison in the lower western part of the Dark shores. But in all honesty the city watch is only concerned in the activity on the docks and leaves the gangs to run the rest. Members of other watches who prove too unruly or insubordinate are often reassigned to Shadowshore, more of a punishment than anything else. Corruption is rife among the Shadowshore Watch, and are known to be in the pocket of the ship barons, gangs or anyone will to offer the highest amount of gold. Only the most blatant of crimes are acted upon, making Shadowshore a haven for Sasserine’s criminal elements.

Infrastructure

There are three Gods worshiped in the district, two of which have shrines Ni-Gorth, God of Secrets and Hannan, Lord of the Sun. St. Worgul has s a church erected in his name.   The biggest business in the Dark Shore and some say in Sarrerine is Amedio Trading Concern (import/export). It employs countless people in the district as well as others in other districts. The trading company is the sole owner of the Gondola waystation.

Assets

Several stores, inns, taverns and other entertainment establishments can be found in the Dark Shores. The store fronts that operate here are typically protected by one of the many gangs that call the dark shores home. The more well known stores are Neldrek’s Goods, It Still Floats!, Shank’s Collectibles and Gentle Nelli’s.   There are three Inns that operate in the dark shores The Narrow House, Coffinsquatters and The Plucked Parrot. Most visitors frequent the Plucked Parrot for its location and the fact they are know for having a lively bar attached to the inn. There is only one true tavern in the Dark Shores, the Skinned Man its one of the craziest taverns in all of Sasserine. However, those who get out of line will face the wrath of the The Naked Boys.   People travel from all over the city and the world to come to the Dark shore in indulge in its pleasures, typically they seek out one of the many brothels, gaming halls or take a trip to the Rum Factory on the tip on the district. For those who need a influx of money seek no further than Honest Brank’s a moneylender who is always open for business. There is even a museum called The House of Science where they but on freak shows.

Guilds and Factions

Gangs

Several small gangs fight each other for dominance and territory within the Dark Shores. The gangs are seen as a necessary evil as they keep the Dark Shores from becoming a place of complete chaos and anarchy, however the city watch still keeps a wary eye on the activities of these groups but does little to intervene as long as they don’t endanger the city’s citizens or invoke a full scale gang war. Word on the street, however, is that one group in particular has managed to establish itself as a force to be reckoned with the Lotus Dragons. If you would like more information about Gangs of the Dark Shore take this link.

Guilds

There are a few guilds in the shadowshore district they are Black Shield Company (mercenary guild), The Notched Axe (mercenary guild), Trapmaker’s Guild, Sailmaker’s Guild and Shipwright’s Guild.

Architecture

In the Dark Shore people live in areas called Stacks. These stacks are comprised of buildings that are haphazardly smooshed together and stacked on top of one other . Some of these stack are piled six stories high, with make shift bridges from one building to another. There are a total of five Stack The East, Central, Blue, Dim and West.   The only exceptions to living in the Stack are the people who live on level Rubble street, here they live in single story homes. The reason for this, is not often but once in a while pieces of rock fall from the cliff of the champion district. This is also where rubble street takes its name from.
