Rune Chisels are a Mage-Forged tool used by
Nida Rune Crafters to imbue stone with single use magic known as Runes.
Calling these tools chisels is really a misnomer as they do not actually carve out stone. The rune chisel is used to channel magic energy onto the stone, more like a filigree, however it leaves the appearance of having been carved. Once the imbued magic has been used the rune will disappear, leaving the stone smooth once more.
Creation
The future owner must assist the Mage Smith in the Rune Chisel's making. The Rune Crafter's
Spirit Magic is imbued into the metal channel in order for their other Gifts to be conducted through it onto the stone.
Materials
Iron and a precarved wooden handle
Process
The Forger draws out Spirit Magic from the future owner to unison cast it along with their own
Earth Magic,
Fire Magic, and
Water Magic required to smith. The Mage Smith will shape the iron first into a cast point that will be affixed via a long pin through the center of the wooden handle; this will be followed by the creation of several trenched tips that can be attached to the cast point and allow for the creation of various sized runes.
Usage
Rune Crafters channel their Gift, usually
Elemental Magic, down along the Chisel affixing it to the stone in the corresponding runic pattern. Crafters cannot imbue a Gift they do not possess, regardless of their knowledge of runic patterns.
The strength of the magic imbued corresponds to the size of the runic pattern affixed. Crafters are additionally limited by the strength of their own Gift(s).
Runed Items
Some common examples of items created with a Rune Chisel are the
Cold Stones and
Hot Stones. They are both highly sought after when the
Night Market arrives in any town, and used by the Market itself. Food vendors at the Market use the Cold Stone to make rolled ice cream and rolled ice fruit and the Hot Stone to make crepes. Cold Stones line specially designed wagons that the Night Market uses to transport perishable goods.
